I read the other week that a number of sports are being added to the London Olympics in 2012. I have a few suggestions that reflect the changing face of popular sports in the 21st century… in particular Extreme Sports.
My suggestion are variations on existing Extreme Sports that take them to a whole new level of danger and excitement, while removing all risk.
The first is Base Dumping.
This is the same as Base Jumping, where participants jump from high buildings, bridges or other structures, release special parachutes, then glide to earth. Apart from the risks of miscalculating the height or your ’chute failing to open, there’s also the risk of being caught by police and jailed.
In Base Dumping, all of these risks are eliminated by the simple twist of dumping the parachute before jumping.
The second is Bungee Dumping, a variation of an extreme sport that originated in the South Pacific as a rite of passage for young men to prove their manhood by jumping from tall towers, head-first, their ankles attached by long vines to the tops of the towers to prevent them from killing or crippling themselves.
The modern variant, Bungee Jumping, uses a specially-designed rubber cord that’s attached to a bridge, crane or similar structure at one end and the jumper’s ankles at the other. This lessens the stress on the legs and body and enhances the thrill by recoiling several times until the elasticity of the cord no longer has an effect. The risks are, again, miscalculation of the height/cord length, snapping of the cord, dislocation of limbs, head trauma, heart failure, etc.
All of these are eliminated in Bungee Dumping by dumping the cord. The thrill of the plunge is heightened dramatically, knowing the certainty of the outcome.
My final suggestion is one familiar to most people in Internet marketing. This is Conclusion Dumping — right up there with Base Dumping and Bungee Dumping. This involves jumping to conclusions but, in the spirit of bringing total certainty to the sport, this variant involves not only the dumping of all facts, but also dumping any attempt to obtain those facts, or to involve any degree of reason or objectivity, whatsoever.
Of the three, this Extreme Sport is the most widely popular (almost universal, in fact) in Internet marketing. The only place where it’s even more popular and widespread is amongst the anti-IM crowd!
