Do We Get Easily Distracted?

Posted 10-18-2008 at 07:44 PM by Steven Wagenheim

They say that a lot of adults have ADHD. I don't know. I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV. But I do know this much...distraction can kill your business.

If you think I'm kidding, try getting anything done with a 2 year old running around trying to get into everything and anything. No, I don't have a 2 year old but those of you with one, you know what I mean.

What distractions do I have? Mostly myself.

I tend to let my mind wander at times. I'll start thinking about something and it'll lead to an idea and I'll want to jump on that idea right away...forgetting what it was I was working on just prior to that idea.

So, how do I keep from letting this happen?

Well, keeping my mind from wandering is not easy to do. I try to stay focused but it's not always easy. But this is what I DO have control over...how I let it affect me.

So, instead of dropping what I'm doing when I get a great idea, I simply go to my Excel spreadsheet and type my idea. I put it on kind of a to-do list and then go back to what I was working on.

That's how I keep my project time lines in check. That's how I get things finished. That's how I make a consistent income.

Do I have a list of to-do's a mile long? Of course I do. It's so loaded it's almost a joke. But guess what? The item that is currently number 2 is going to be the next thing that gets worked on after my current project is done.

I think it's called discipline. I don't know how to teach that. But, I can give you some tips to keep yourself disciplined.

  1. Make that list. I know you probably don't want to, but trust me. It helps a lot. It doesn't matter how long it gets. There is always tomorrow.
  2. Prioritize the list. The things that have to get done right away, do them right away. That means if an emergency comes up and you have to take care of it right away, bump it to the top of the list and do it.
  3. Cross off things as you finish them. I just delete them from the spreadsheet.
  4. To keep yourself motivated, give yourself a treat for every task you complete. If it's a simple task, like finishing an article, treat yourself to a snack. If it's something major like finishing an ebook, treat yourself to a dinner out or a new suit.
These few things keep me focused and help me to get my work done on a daily basis. This leads me to ultimately making more money.

To YOUR Success,
