What I Look For In A Home Business

I know most of the people reading this are probably not into those home businesses. They're probably into actually creating a product and selling it OR promoting other's products as an affiliate.

However, for those of you who are interested in home businesses with real potential, let me tell you what it is that I look for in a home business. It essentially comes down to three things.

Product

The business has to have a REAL product. I'm talking about something that people actually want and need. Something that solves a burning problem. Most home businesses either have no real product or a crappy one. This is where most home businesses drop the ball as far as I'm concerned.

Education

Having a good product isn't enough though. What if you're brand new to marketing? Having a great product to sell without the knowledge to sell it is almost as worthless as not having a product at all. So the home business MUST have a comprehensive training program. This is another area where most drop the ball. I've seen some that are so bad that they tell you to post free FFA ads. That's my first clue that this company is clueless. So education is critical.

Simplicity

Please do not get this confused with the word easy or no work. In my almost 7 years of doing this, I have found very few things that require no work. However, I have found procedures that are simple enough to follow. Sure, each step might require a specific skill, but the process itself is simple enough to follow. For me, if I were to get into a home business, it would have to have a simple process to follow in order to make sales. In this respect, quite a few do have nice automated systems. Problem is, they lack the product and/or the education.

Like I said, you're probably not even concerned about stuff like this, but if you are, you're probably asking, "How do I tell if a home business meets these qualifications?"

Here is what you do.

For the product, you simply look at the site and see what it is they're promoting. If it's not listed, write to them and flat out ask them what product you'll be selling. If it doesn't sound like something that has real value, like financial planning training or some piece of software that performs a needed task, then chuck it. It's probably not worth promoting.

For the education, this is tough. Most companies won't let you see their back office to see what kind of training they offer. So again, you have to write and ask what kind of training they provide. If they're vague with their answers, such as they don't specifically say they'll teach you PPC, article marketing, etc., then IMO, they're probably not worth pursuing.

For the simplicity, this is another tough one. Without seeing the backoffice to see how the system works, the only thing you can rely on his their feedback to your inquiry. Ask them to describe the process as best as they can. If they're vague or refuse to answer, skip them.

This is why finding a worth while homes business is so hit and miss. It's why I stopped looking for them about 6 years ago. There are good ones out there. They are just few and far in between.
