Picking the right type of video for your marketing pt. 1.

Posted 05-05-2011 at 11:05 AM by swilliams09

For many internet marketers getting into video that seems to be the big question. What type of video do I need? So many options. Do I get a camera and record myself? Do I create a power point or camistia video? Do I hire a video person? Do I need fancy graphics and animation?

Well the question really is, what am I trying to sell and what do I need to get across to my customers?

As a video professional, I make my living mainly creating television commercials. It's pretty cut and dried, We consult with the client, we find out what he's trying to sell or the message he wants to get across. We develop a script. Shoot the footage, send the voiceover off, edit and graphics, create animation and send the final through post production.

For internet marketers it's a little different. And for that you may need different things at different times.

Let's say you want to sell yourself as an expert in a particular niche. One of the best ways to do that is to put your face on the screen. Let people see who you are. Sure a nice opening title animation will help, especially if you intend to make it a series on a particular topic, but for the beginner its not necessary.

For instance, I recently bought a dslr digital camera. And so I went online searching for good information. I found this guy (no affiliate links here) http://froknowsphoto.com . He's presenting himself as an expert so you see him in every video. If you go back and look at some of his very first videos, they weren't as polished, no nice opening or sales tag on the end, no high end production values, just raw information. And that was enough to build him a following.

For the budding internet marketer with limited resources, my advice (contrary to my financial interest as a video service provider) is this. Use what ever you have to get started. Don't worry about fancy graphics right now, don't worry about high end production values. Get the best camera you can get and record your videos. It's all about the content. As long as you provide good content on a consistent basis you're audience will grow. As you grow in popularity and start to earn money you can reinvest into better production.

Also, invest in proper sound recording. Your video can be a grainy webcam video, but sound is is what sells video. You can get a cheap lapel mic for under 25 bucks if you look around. Trust me, it will make all the difference in the world in comparison to an video camera or webcam mic. It brings your sound up close and personal, and cuts down on room noise.

In my next post, I'll discuss trailers and sales letters and some of the best ways to start out for cheap, and what to do when you plan to move on to the next level.
