3 Reasons Barter Makes Cents For Your Business

Posted 08-18-2009 at 07:13 PM by Sylvia Meier

Barter is very misunderstood. Most believe it to only be direct trading where you trade your watermelons for someone else's eggs. This requires people to directly need what each other offers, and can become quite difficult, because the given value of each product must be the same, and sometimes one person will not need the exact amount the other would have to offer for it to be a fair trade.

Trade exchanges and barter memberships change these dynamics and make better business sense for everyone involved, and this is why barter is best for business.

Reason 1- Improves Your Sales

Barter boosts your sales. When you sign up to a barter exchange you are given a trade director or broker. They are responsible for assisting in your trading efforts. They become essentially your new sales force. They get your product seen by other barter members, which gets you more sales, without any additional efforts on your part.
And once you have your business in front of new eyes, you can begin to make new sales you never would've made before, and those trade sales can also provide cash sales in the end.

Reason 2- Expand Beyond Local Borders

Expand your business globally. No longer are you subject to the geographic location of your business. You can now get sales from all over the globe. This opens your business to new customers and client bases that would normally be out of reach for you and your business. Geography is no longer a disadvantage for you when you are a part of a trade organization.

Reason 3- Move Idle Inventory Or Expand The Profability Of Downtime

When stock sits on the shelf it is costing your business money, when you clearance that stock you are losing money in a way. When you utilize barter, you can still sell that stock at the regular price and then you no longer have to reduce the price, because the inventory isn't as readily available on the trade marketplaces, and you can then use those trade dollars to get the things you need like advertising or other products. Or you can sell off rooms that are not normally full in a hotel during off seasons, or fill up extra slots in an empty day for a hairdresser. No longer are you limited like in the cash world. On the trade marketplace you can still get full retail price and cut the costs associated with downtime of employees or idle inventory.

Barter is the place to be during a recession. It is a great business tool during all market types, but the recession makes it best, due to the needed nature of cutting costs and minimizing your bottom line. Business wise it just makes sense.
