The Fear of Failure
Posted 01-02-2011 at 09:48 PM by TheGetStartedExpert
Starting a business in 2011 is probably one of the many resolutions people have made. It's only January 2nd but have people already forgotten their resolutions? Once we get past the excitement of the new year, we come face to face with the harsh reality that real change or progress requires work. The sheer amount of effort discourages people from pursing their goals. One of the problems that I tend to have when going after my goals is the fear of failure.
We fear failure because we are afraid of not living up to other people’s or our own expectations. We tend to be are our own worst critics. One symptom of the fear of failure is perfectionism. Perfectionism distracts us so that we either don’t finish that big project or we don’t even start. That inner critic says, “Who are you? Who do you think you are? That’s right! You’re just a nobody!”
When I hear that voice, I realize that it is a part of me. It’s the part of me that allows the fear of the unknown to dwarf the misery of the known. It’s the harsh critic, but it will be a part of me for as long as I live. I respond by saying, “I love you. Now, shut the hell up!”
Admit that part of yourself, and then tell him or her them where they can go and the quickest way to get there! It sounds hooky, but it feels great, folks!
