Starting an online business is relatively simple, but can be met with many obstacles such as lack of knowledge, criticism from loved ones, and mental barriers. The fear of failure is a common, debilitating mental barrier that keeps people from their greatness. I posted about this topic before, but it's worth repeating.
No one wants to look like a fool or to appear dumb. For example, there are books and audio programs out there designed specifically to help men overcome the fear of failure when trying to talk to women. Fear of failure is also why public speaking is the number one fear, particularly the United States. Messing up is one thing, doing it in front of a captive audience terrifies people more than the fear of death.
Part of the fear of failure is being afraid of not living up to other people’s or one’s own expectations. We are our own worst critic. The fear of failure is a defense mechanism that is admirable, but can paralyze your success. Understand that the inner critic is the scared part of you that lives for the status quo. It is afraid to step outside of its comfort zone. Acknowledge the critic and recognize him or her for what he or she is, a scared child.
Even the greatest ideas are meaningless when one gives in to their own fears. The solution may not be easy, but it is simple. Do the thing you fear and keep at it. It sounds cliche, but it is true.
