Linking With “High PR website versus High PR webpage”

Posted 06-15-2009 at 01:19 AM by Tripti_LPM

One of the most common statement link vendors make in their quality parameter is “Get links from High PR websites”. This makes their pitch sound compelling to most of their prospects. But we find the statement a bit misleading because you don’t get links from websites. The links are obtained from web pages, be it the home page or inner pages – website being a collection of such web pages.

What we believe is they talk about the home page of the website. Generally, home page is the strongest page of any website and usually commands a high PR. More often than not, vendors provide links quoting the PR of the website (home page), when the link is actually given from one of the inner pages. No wonder that many of us think that linking with High PR website is synonymous to linking with High PR webpage.

As you would know, each link to your website is counted as a vote by search engines; not all votes being equal. Since links play a crucial role in search engine rankings, especially Google, it is imperative to understand that not all links are treated equal. A link from a high PR/authority webpage will have more positive impact on search engine rankings than a link from low PR/authority webpage.

The next time you contract a link building vendor to develop links for your website, be advised that:-
  • A website having PR 8 for its home page does not necessarily mean that the inner pages have the same PR.
“Google allocates Page Rank to individual web page and not for the whole website.”

Tip:
Check the PR of the web page from where the link would be sourced. It is also advisable to check the total number of outbound links and no follow attribute.

  • The home page and the inner pages may not be thematically similar.
Site A deals with insurance (Home page PR 6) and has two inner pages, one for auto insurance (PR 5) and the other for home insurance (PR 4). Site B solely deal in home insurance. Under the given scenario, the best option would be to get link from the webpage dedicated to home insurance page for website B. A link from the auto insurance page or the site’s home page is not thematically relevant and would not send classified traffic to your website.

Tip: It is important to ensure that links are obtained from thematically relevant web pages. Also, links should not be obtained from FFAs, banned websites, and bad neighborhood.

Link building is not only a great way to achieve high rankings but also contributes in sending classified traffic to your website. So think before you link!
