I am going to expand on a post I made in a thread here on Warrior Forum about the value of being an Amazon affiliate, and questioning the 'truth' in actually making money as one.

The truth is that you can definitely earn a good income as an Amazon Associate, especially in the months leading up the shopping holidays (Christmas mostly).

First you must realize and accept that you don't start out immediately making money via Amazon. It takes time, research, and writing informative content. But as you build on your work you will steadily see income.

How being an Amazon Associate works: When a visitor clicks on a link that has your affiliate code in it a browser cookie (a bit of code) will be saved to their browser (unless they are blocking third party cookies!). ANYTHING they buy during the next 24 hours will earn you a commission. The commissions range from about 4.5% to 15%. That commission can add up fast.

Amazon is trusted and used by millions worldwide and does an excellent job at upselling (convincing the visitor that they should buy extras or upgrade to a better version of something).

All you need to do is get the visitor to Amazon. If they are convinced partially by you that they should by something, they will do it.

The best place to start:
The very best place to start as an Amazon affiliate is Hub Pages, then Squidoo, in that order.

You benefit in a few ways.
  1. It is free.
  2. Both Hub Pages and Squidoo attract a great deal of traffic and can help to push your pages up in the search engine ranking. The more good pages the better. *Take part in their forums and make friends!
  3. Many visitors are familiar with both sites and usually trust what they read, thereby increasing the chance that they will follow your Amazon product links.
  4. You can do keyword research and niche research without paying a dime, so you have nothing to lose.

Select a niche or two and make a Blogger or Wordpress blog. If you are consistent about posting and a decent writer, you can generate a following and possibly make some more money.

Once you have developed a good presence on these sites, and you have started to generate some income, use the money that you've earned to buy/host your own domain. Then, build an Amazon storefront.

Repeat.
