One Authority Site vs Multiple Niche Sites

I forgot to mention this post I made the other day regarding the much debated question "should I create one authority site or build lots of niche sites?". Of course, it's one of those questions in internet marketing where there is no "right" answer, as they can both be very profitable business models. Plus the fact that it's not an either/or debate.
I think it's worth continued discussion though, especially with recent developments like Google slamming many "thin" content sites in the search rankings and marketers scrambling to make sense of what happened and whether small (say 5-15 pages) niche sites are too risky. Ultimately it comes down to a personal decision. "What is right for me?" "Would I rather focus on one site and just keep going until I "make" it work? Or shall I crank out 5 little niche sites and see which one starts making money?".
For me personally, I like the idea of working on just a small manageable number of sites, which for me is around about 4 or 5. Any more than that and I think I'd be spreading myself to thin and probably get burnt out with lack of progress on any one site.
It's good not to have all your eggs in one basket and also, multiple sites means potential to explore different business models, such as CPA, CPV, info products, forum, Kindle publishing, other affiliate marketing. One thing is for sure it keeps things interesting.
How about you? Are you a one-website kind of person or do you prefer to spread your bets? Let me know what you think of the post.
