Obviously buying wholesale goods and selling them at retail value is genius, if you have the proper set up.

The question here is how to find good wholesale items?

I am a web designer/ IM, and an old friend struck up a business proposal.

My goal before we get into further detail is to make sure his source of wholesale goods is viable and if buying from this site is smart.

The site is nike shox, cheap nike shox, wholesale cheap nike shox

With proper SEO, a clean ecommerce website, Money to invest, and hard work, do you think this could potentially have a good turn around?

I would Like advice from people who have wholesale experience!!!!

According to site jabber, this site is not recommended, however, it is based on only one review. My 2 cents...proceed with caution and if you do order, make it a small purchase.

      hmm, no

      the site's name is obamasell.com

why would they set up a legitimate business on a name like that, which was most likely a dropped name.

no a real wholesale business would get a real name to put their business on.

Or .. if they really purposely selected that name for their legit business then you have to really question their judgement.

I'm in this sort of industry. Firstly, no, that site is not to be trusted.

But for future sites, follow these steps and keep a 'tally' of 'demerit points'. Go through each step and add +1 to each problem with the website. This is loosely based off an e-commerce/dropshipping ebook I wrote a while ago.

(please note, the following information is copyright and I do not give permission to reproduce it)

        1) Check the site out.
Look for payment options (PayPal is good. If they only offer Western Union or bank transfers, then add +1 demerit point, it's a bad thing).
Look at the prices. Are they WAY too low to be believable? Do a test order - do they charge delivery? Does everything seem 100% legitimate? If not, even if it feels 90% legitimate, add +1 demerit point to your tally/counter.

        2) Google the following WITH "Quotation mark"
        "websitename.com"
        websitename.com scam
        websitename.com review
Now - the MOST important thing to look out for, is if the results give a POSITIVE review - this COULD mean it is from the website owner. But, it may not. Again, add +1 demerit for each BAD review. However, if a customer says they RECEIVED their goods, but it was late, or the product was broken, this means that the company DOES send products and it could actually be a good thing, believe it or not!

        3) Go to Whois Lookup - Domain Names Search, Registration, & Availability | Whois.net
Under 'whois lookup', enter their domain name, and select the correct ending (ie .com , .org). MAKE SURE it is correct!
Now, if there is information there, good. If it's private, add +1 demerit as you can't be certain where they're from.
Now you should have a name, or a company name, an address. See if it matches their website. If not, add +1 demerit.

        4) If the number of demerit points is less than 2... Then do a test order.
If you receive the goods, and they're on-time, this is good. But, some "companies" (I should say "criminals") are sneaky. If they notice you're a first-time buyer, they might think you're doing a test-order and will send you the goods quickly. Then, when you place a big order, they will scam you.

        5) Call them.
If they don't have any contact number, and/or the phone rings out (ensure you're not calling out of business hours - they may even be based in another country), then ADD +2 DEMERIT POINTS. This is a big one. If you can't contact them urgently over the phone when you have a complaining customer, then you're in trouble.

        6) Make sure they have a working email address. Test it, make sure it's a human being replying to your email. If not, well, you know what to add.

If the total tally of demerit points exceeds 1, you probably shouldn't do businesses with them.
If it exceeds 3, STAY CLEAR.

If it's 0, there's still no guarantee they're legitimate, but I'd say you'd be pretty safe to continue.

        Best of luck.

P.S. That website isn't offering wholesale prices. $40 for a pair of shoes is not wholesale. $5 is.

I would highly suggest you stay away from that site. I have a lot of experience in the wholesale business. I run a successful ebay business.

There are a lot of wholesale sites out there.

    You can start with these:

Wholesale Central - Directory of wholesalers and wholesale products
    Wholesale Closeouts Liquidations - Closeoutcentral.com
Liquidation.com - Wholesale and Surplus Auctions by Liquidators
Macy's Excess Inventory Liquidation | BStock Auction (This is a liquidation house, you will need a TAX ID (non ssn) to join)

Let me know if you have any question. But the site in your original post is one to stay away from.

lol, ebay has forced me to master finding wholesale deals and understanding the wholesale business. :p

Sorry, my sentence structure could have been better, but it's late, so that's my excuse

Haha, that's okay. You did give some good links. When I see 'ebay business', I think 'stay-at-home mom/mum', but it sounds like you've got a more in-depth business-style approach to selling on ebay, which is a great thing.

you have to contact companies with merchandise directly if you want to buy a small excess inventory... Thomas Guide for distributors ( this you can use online)... if you go to sites with list you are are already paying too much as they have made the contact and marked up the price as broker or owner.

We bought and and sold across the USA quantities from truckloads to entire warehouses of merchandise this way

Why did you choose "obamasell.com"? This has no relevance to what you're trying to accomplish. People will expect to see a video speech of obama when they click on your domain name... not nike shoes and socks.

I had an online retail store that was (relatively) successful. We sold goods and one thing I learned. In retail (brick and mortar or online) you make your money when you buy. There are some things you should be aware of when looking for a distributor:

    1. All reputable distributors will require that you provide your business information, including EIN and business registration. This is because there are no sales taxes charged when buying for resale. They have to show the tax man that they are selling to businesses who resale and collect tax at POS.

When you find a website with 'wholesale' prices, but doesn't require this information - then they are not really wholesale. They are buying from a distributor at wholesale then reselling the goods.

Most 'wholesalers' who find online are bogus. It takes a lot of time and research to find a good, reputable wholesaler. Once you find one it often takes some time to discuss your business, fill out appropriate paperwork, etc.

THAT being said. I have purchased from 'middle'men fake wholesalers and resold the goods. Since eCommerce sales don't require sales tax anyways I found some products it wasn't worth trying to work with the distributor directly because they were foreign, etc.

The only problem with basing your business on these goods is that you are actually paying more than your competition for the same goods. Your competition will be buying from the actual distributor at a lower cost. This will give them many advantages.

I'm currently looking for wholesalers, it's a nice niche area, I can provide pricing that allows room to make money. It's a niche and we have a relatively small product selection though Iraqi Dinar, Vietnam Dong, and counterfit money detection pens.
