I've had success with both, but I feel my templates perform a little better. Probably just a gut instinct, I haven't done any "real" testing to compare.

I built around John's (Xfactor's) green template PLUS I've had some of my students build sites around that template, and they performed as advertised. They're getting AdSense and affiliate clicks, but we haven't done any "split" testing to see what templates perform better...

I built the Memory Foam Mattress Topper site (http://Memory-Foam-Matress-Topper.com) using John's template (I reworked it for Wordpress), and it was getting some clicks, but I changed the right sidebar to a lighter color and it seemed to get "more" clicks after the change (it made almost $12 in AdSense the first few weeks). Whether that was due to the change, or just the site aging and getting better position in the SERPS, I really don't know.

I do concede the less "busy" the template, the better they perform...

Thanks for the question, I believe templates are a major factor in determining AdSense clicks. If the site is too "busy" then the person that lands on the site doesn't know what to do.

That was one of the "main" points I took away from John's work, KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)
