Converting free users into paying subscribers
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hello Warriors,

I have been chipping away at my lifes work for over 5 years now and only recently have we implemented a paywall.

Sales are not what I expected... at all.

I have created a meaningful website and invested thousands of dollars and years of my life to make this happen. In addition my father, (the inventor) has put nearly 20+ years into researching this "Memory Test."

It would be so nice to hear some fresh opinions on how to better convert my users from taking the free test to signing up and helping my small business grow.

MemTrax - Online Memory Test

The free test is very simple and is the same thing every time you take it. When you sign up you unlock hundreds of images and the ability to track your results over time.

Maybe this niche is too new?

Measuring brain health is applicable to every person out there that has a brain and I have set this thing up to be appealing on a global scale.

Any and all comments are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the time you spent reading my troubles...

-Curtis

Nice site, a lot of good things going for it already. Here are my suggestions:

1. Remove banner ad on hompage, keep the focus on the test and the funnel to becoming a paid member.

2. Benefits, benefits, benefit, stress the importance of why they need to take the test and the benefits.

- monitor and improve your health.
- help diagnose memory disorders.
- brain health is applicable to every person (explain why)

3. Build trust asap, tell the story as you did here and include info on the qualifications of those involved.

- has put nearly 20+ years into researching
- my lifes work for over 5 years now

4. Add a step in the test to signup process (may be too big a commitment at that stage) Perhaps capture an email in exchange for explanation on their scores. Then nurture the lead.

Those are a few things that came to mind, again nice site and you should be able to make it work getting the return on the time, effort, and resources put into the project.

Hey Curtis,

In my opinion, I would say that the niche doesn't matter. Whether it is saturated, or if anyone has barely heard of it.

What DOES matter are the services that you are offering in your chosen niche. I believe that if your free users appreciate your services and find a lot of value in what you have to offer, they shouldn't mind paying for them.

Just my two cents, but I hope this helps out! :-)

Hi Curtis,

I feel your pain.

I visited your site and I'm not sure if your model of monetizing this program
will really work and this all has to do with POSITIONING!

Take luminosity.com for example. I think they are your direct competitors,
but notice that they POSITION their product as a memory/ brain trainer
and not a tester. They make it appear FUN and sell the benefit you would
derive from these GAMES. (They are not "tests")

The layout and copy on your site also needs some serious attention. The
video should be at the top and should be SELLING the product rather
than giving instructions on how to use the product.

And why you placing other ads on your site?

There are lot more things I could add but I've given you a start. At least
check out Brain Games & Brain Training - Lumosity and see how they do things. You may
get some more ideas--like using more "games".

Best of luck,

Ray Edwards

Hi Curtis,

Since you are posting in the Conversion Rate Optimization forum, I have to ask, have you tried CRO? CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) is a discipline of testing and using advanced analytical methods to improve conversion rates. What testing have you done? Are you gaining marketing insights from your data? If not, perhaps giving CRO a go would be a great way to start.

Have you dug into your data at all to see what is working and what is not? Do you even have analytics installed? Regardless of which market you are in there is much that you can learned from testing ideas and measuring the results.

Make sure you have a decent analytics program implemented on your website. Setup marketing campaigns organized around various channels and market segments. Test various value propositions to find which your audience responds to the most. Learn how to setup valid testing methods and let your data inform your decisions.

Asking for opinions from people that aren't even in your market niche isn't much better than guessing. It may be good for getting ideas to test, but don't just blindly implement changes based on opinions. Instead setup split tests based on a hypothesis, analyze results to form a theory, and then do follow up testing to confirm the theory. Why guess when you can know?

As Ray suggested, take a look at your direct competitors, you will likely find a lot more useful ideas from your direct competitors, some of them have surely done some market testing and have implemented the winning techniques.

It took me less than 1 minute to find these websites:
Free Online Memory Test
Games for the Brain
Brain Training | Brain Exercises | Brain Fitness Games | Brain Metrix
Brain Fitness and Cognitive Health Authority: Market Research and Advisory Services | SharpBrains
Fit Brains
Brain Exercises, Brain Fitness, Brain Training - BrainHQ from Posit Science
Brain Fitness | Brain Games | Improve Your Mind | HAPPYneuron
Brain Exercises, Brain Age Test and Cognitive Exercises by MyBrainTrainer
Braingle: Brain Teasers, Puzzles, Riddles, Trivia and Games
Brain Games | Brain Games for Adults | Brainist
Brainfitness For Life | Brain Fitness is now recognized as a key ingredient in our overall well being and quality of life
Professional Cognitive Therapy Solutions | Scientific Brain Training PRO
Alzheimer's Foundation of America - National Memory Screening

You should be able to get plenty of ideas for testing from those competitors.

Curtis,

It's kind of a coincidence as a memory loss site is one I'm planning on launching shortly.

You may want to add a "Share" button on the free test page for things to go a little viral. It's definitely a page people would share IMO. (maybe even give people an option to share their score... people will compete)

Price points - are people paying for memberships at these prices? Would an annual low pricepoint give you more sales. Perhaps a discount for people sharing the page is an option as well.

Consider running own affiliate program when you feel your price point is where it should be.

I see an affiliate link for LifeExtension - are sales occurring with that? If so - would a free membership bring you more money because of back-end product sales? Additional/Alternative affiliate product options?

Perhaps ad revenue from Adsense, similar ad network or even your own ads (maybe buysellads.com)

Consider licensing your test for other sites to use?

Stop Playing Games With Your Brain

Brain Training games are huge right now but I really truly want to stay away from that.

I tried that years ago and it puts me head up with Lumosity.

I feel that if I stay scientific and come from a more clinical angle than it may have better long term benifits. I see this as a blood pressure cuff (measures blood flow), thermometer (measures temp), or some type of medical tool that can truly benefit some one( we measure brain health). Brain games are just half assed video games that appeal to a broader audience. If some one truly want to expand their cognitive capabilities they should play an actual challenging game.

Looking beyond that I hope to appeal to pharmaceuticals to use this test for AD and dementia drug trial as well as providing a tool that can be used in a doctors office to routinely check up on some ones mental health capacity.

While I will look at the competitors, all of which I know well, it is hard to stay unique in this rapidly growing feild and I just want to come off with some thing useful.

Old cognitive tests are boring and outdated, this is my approach to pushing the computerized cognitive revolution forward....

thanks again for the time!
