Spent $200 in AdWords and 0 conversions, what are we doing wrong?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hi everyone,
We recently started up a website http://www.hyperionelectronics.com. So far we have had a couple hundred clicks in adwords and a little bit of various traffic from other sources around the web. We have tested our checkout options and they are working fine.
So far we have had a total of about 500-600 visitors to our website but haven't sold anything. We are mostly competitively priced and we have given out lots of promo codes and we offer free shipping on all orders.
Here are some of the landing pages we've used in adwords:
http://hyperionelectronics.com/colle...ectronic-signs
http://hyperionelectronics.com/collections/laptops
http://hyperionelectronics.com/collections/tablets
We have been using pretty targeted phrase matched and exact match keywords that are pulled from keyword planner.
What are we doing wrong?

Perhaps the red popup and yet a second popup on the page: Electronic Signs – Hyperion Electronics, LLC isn't most attracting thing - it's also a competitive niche perhaps customers don't buy a laptop right away, they shop around for best prices and compare, etc...

Anyway here's my tips for the laptops page:

I think this is a just random text (Acer Aspire E5-521 15.6" Laptop). I'd put the best features in there only instead of brand name and E5-521. And the features they're most interested in, e.g. Windows 8.1 , 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD plus this shows them you have quality products - it means something, it grabs attention.

Second I'd sort them by price, lowest to highest by default - that just makes them easy to compare and gives an idea which are the best performing and lowest, instead of a jumble of laptops.

I would also make the "sort by" feature more visible and prominent, at first glance I couldn't locate it, it's text color being too dim, it doesn't look like a clickable feature. The "sort by" default state I won't leave it as Sort Alphabetically since it serves no purpose to do that for visitor - instead make default as "Best Selling"

I'd also put a button to allow them to see all laptops on one page (instead of 2) - remember they're comparing so all on one page will be helpful.

In the "SHOP BY" I will only list common items (like windows 8, and brand names) and not the 1.33GHz, etc because it can be confusing for newbies. Create a "sort by advanced options" and put those advanced things there, advanced user just click that button and search how they want.

There's more I'd do but I think that's enough

I've just checked your site and within one second I could already tell I would never order from this website. Your theme does not look like what I would expect from a professional eshop. Just check one of your laptop product pages and compare it with the laptop product page on Amazon. They offer much more information and in a much more readable way. I've also noticed lots of products without images like here: Motorola 27-mile 2-pack – Hyperion Electronics, LLC

You can spend $2000 on Adwords, if your website doesn't look right you are wasting your time. Look at the big players' websites in your niche and do something similar.

Thanks for the insights everyone. We are still in the early phases of the business and will definitely be implementing the tips here. How can we get a theme that looks similar to Amazon?

Needs to point Out How they Highlighted The Upcoming Festivals and Offers.. Do same instated slider.

Now Go On there Category Laptop.. "/site/computers-pcs/laptop-computers/"
Look How They Highlighted The Brands.
Look How They Sort Their Offerings Like Featured,Only On BB... just Do the same thing for you.. i believe your would get a lot of sells as your expected

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the tips, and I'm going with a new design now. There are still a bunch of things that need to be done on the site, but I'm taking everyone's advice in mind.

This is the current landing page we are going to start testing with:

Acer Iconia A3

Please let me know what you guys think, and if there are any more tips to help it convert well please let me know.

Get rid of the RED add to cart buttons, RED means stop.

To make money with adwords there is a lot of testing needed, I didn't make any sales for my first $3000, but now, seven years later, every 3$ I spend I make 7 back.

Are you tracking your visitors, and how long they stay on the website? Which keywords they use? Are you targeting likely customers only? Do you have a negative keyword list longer than your keywords ? You should, but it takes time.

Increase your product image size, and get rid of the Yellow highlighting on the left, it draws my eyes to places that won't help your conversion.

First of all you offer very little product information for most of your products. I would suggest you offer detailed product descriptions listing all main features. People are buying expensive electronic products and they are unlikely to buy just reading a short paragraph or two. It would be better if you can have a few customer reviews as well.

Secondly, you might be going after very broad keywords like laptops or laptops in {your location}. I would suggest you change your strategy and target product/model specific keywords. People who are generally searching for laptops may be just starting their quest to buy laptop. They dont know as yet which laptop they want to buy. They are in the research mode as of now. Later on they move on to buying phase. So, it might not be profitable to catch buyers who are in the research mode as yet. Catch people who have progressed farther into the buying cycle so that you can get more conversions.

You have to remember your market space is filled with a not so good reputation. so right off the bat you are working with a trust issue. reading your "About Us" page. "Hi my name is XXX and we wanted to start a online only business that sells in USD and bit coin" - not helping.

The 800 number helps.... might be nice if it was listed on the contact page as well.

By any chance do you sell on e-bay? if you do, I might suggest highlighting that as a source of social proof. " look at our e-bay rating "

The blog post on how to get rich were you divulge that you really are a tool salesman and do this part time again is not helping any.

Your site looks amateurish and there is no contact info.

I wouldn't feel safe ordering from your site, I bet others feel the same.

Ah wait you did have contact details, all the way down, make that more prominent and do something about your site.

This is how a solid site looks: http://www.mediamarkt.nl/

My first advice is stop wasting your money on AdWords before you get your site in place.

Like everyone else pointed your design is number one reason for zero sales. Firstly get yourself a professional logo and one good-looking theme. After that spend some time browsing other successful online stores in your niche and copy some ideas.

You're going to lose a lot of time if you do everything by yourself. Hire someone to shorten your learning curve.

Cheers!

Copy those that lead the pack in your field. They have already spent large amounts of money and time with highly skilled professionals figuring out what works best. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. Just copy the look and feel of those that lead the pack to the best of your budget and abilities. Copy or imitate those businesses that have customers who like, use and are comfortable with the processes they use to sell and deliver the product.

Study everything take notes and make changes. Make sure to ask question's and then seek out the answers analyzing the site and searching the web for clues to their internet sales success. Questions such as why and what works for them.

You might find articles or videos from company officials that explain what and why they do it and why it works. Do some key searches of the names of top officials CEO's, CFO'S , COO's , marketing and other departments, in those businesses that are doing well at what you want to do well at. Watch, listen, study, learn and follow through and take action on your new found information.

Right off the bat your company name needs a design make-over and the color of it needs to be changed in my opinion. The yellow is too light and hard to see . Your company name should jump out at you and be a recognizable design that creates a positive and recognizable brand image. You may want to hire someone to create a highly recognizable professional logo to help further develop a company brand.

Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! Yeah the product pages are definitely a work in progress. So far I've been running Google Shopping ads, and seeing what items people are looking for. Then I will go back and update the product page while running remarketing ads, just because there is so much product and so little time to iterate through one by one on items people might not even be coming to the site for right now.

I'm only two months in and we just got our first couple customers on the website! My site did $3200 in sales on Tuesday ! That so far has been my best day in sales ever. Thank you guys for all the help!

Hey, but there is still lots of work to do and I really appreciate everyone's help. Any feedback is always welcome.

Are you including the prices of your products in your remarketing banners? Because you are competitively priced, I would say this will really help reduce wasted clicks and bring your overall conversion rate % higher.

It might be worth comparing the same banner with no pricing with one that has pricing on and measuring the results to see how much of a difference it makes.

If you are not getting anything after spending $200 then its not a big deal, it happens in start when you are not so much experienced and working on adwords. My one and only advice for you is to analyze your keywords again and also analyze keywords your competitors focusing and then make your strategy.

First thing I would test is remove the background. Less distraction usually translate to higher conversion rate.

The second thing I would test is: For each category (like tablets, laptops), pick one product (your best selling product for example), and make it stand out from the rest. Customers are usually overwhelmed by too many choices.

If you just want to set up a simple split A/B test FAST, and you're frustrated with other A/B testing tools that overwhelm you with hundreds of options, you're gonna love this...

So, in short to what everyone else has said: YOU NEED A BETTER DESIGN

Take a look at the top players in your market, the major retail websites, and make a list of how they organize, structure, and cross promote their products.

Go through their checkout process and analyze how many steps/clicks it takes you to get from product page to making payment. Use this as your absolute minimum, try to reduce the amount of clicks it takes.

Spending money on a competent designer who has proven experience with successful ecommerce websites would be a good place to start.

A great designer will also have expertise in conversion optimization, as well as keeping things clutter free and loading fast.

Hope this helps!

You really should improve your design instead of losing money in advertising, because you will just loose money, try to make it professional looking. you can check this website for themes : www.themeforest.net

Just a few thoughts.

You are selling products that are sold everywhere on the internet. Why would I buy from a store I have never heard of on a website that looks pretty basic (sorry no offence). I would feel far happier going to a major store. Also if ever I buy electronics I generally go to review sites, find the one I like the most then just google the name of the product and buy the cheapest.

You are not going to be able to compete on price so what else? I see you do free shipping, thats great, that needs to be more prominent on your site. What else? Maybe an extended warranty? A generous extended warranty? A free laptop case? 20% off your next order? etc etc. These are your USPs and they need to be highlighted in your adverts.

But yeah the design of the site needs to be a lot more "fancy" big attractive photos, appealing headlines and fonts. Nobody wants to read a load of small text off a pale blue background

I've spent hundreds on Adwords and made $7 in return. I had zero skill or experience and just went for it.

With Adwords specifically, there are several awesome books out there on Amazon on how to build a proper Adwords PPC campaign. Have you or your partner ever taken the time to study any of these before building your first campaigns?

Feeding Adwords $200 with no real learned skill or experience in Adwords and hoping to see the money start flowing in is a little naive. That's like spending $200 on scratch off tickets because you figure, at least one of them with be a $1,000 winner!

Yeah, your site was not perfect, these guys all suggested small tweaks. You said it yourself your shopping cart works, but 0 conversions for your $200 campaign.

Flawed website aside, your Adwords campaign should have at least given you one conversion if it was created correctly in the first place, right?

I plan to rule the world.... Starting Monday.

This is a matter of opinion, and varies based on a lot of factors. Red draws attention, and can add to conversion. I prefer yellow like amazon, and then a satisfying green confirmation text that rewards the user for getting there.

The site at hand is awful. It's like telling a person who can't hear pitch they are not a good singer. A site that looks like this is fine for an established niche business, but definitely not for retailing cutting edge technology. Much better just to focus on Amazon, there's little reason to compete with them unless you have BIG money and a clever idea.

Hello,

I also spent a lot of money on Adwords and didn't see any conversions, until I found out that I'm paying for untargeted clicks from stupid mobile applications or games. I wrote a threat here: http://www.warriorforum.com/conversi...nversions.html How I solve this.
