New Help To convert with new toy site
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hi,
I just started a new site www.plushisland.com and need some tips on how to convert. I have been using google Adwords and get about 25 new visitors per day. I have gotten about 275 visitors so far and only 1 sale. Heard people say it takes time, but don't understand what would change if it's a new visitor. Seems like my conversion rate is very very low!!

Ok, I'll list a couple of things that I think needs work.

1. Headline - what is special about your business? Try to hit on that here if possible
2. Design - The design could use some work. It looks like a site I built in high school (no offense). A designer could make it look really sharp. Given it is a toy store, it should look fun and engaging.
3. Navigation - I'd skip the "shop" nav button (people are naturally going to shop). By having the products in the navigation people will be able to tell what type of stuff you have without having to click around.

Something I saw on your about page: We also specialize in out of production toys (legos, funko figures, etc). This could be a really cool way to show your unique value. Also I'm sure keywords in Adwords are cheaper for out of production toys vs. current popular toys (I'm just assuming here).

If you'd like me to go in more detail on any of this, shoot me a pm.

I've done conversion work for many big companies such as Expedia, The Boston Globe, Kobo Books, Firestone and more...

I am going to very much agree with "Shop" being a killer for you. That specifically is a wordpress / woocommerce thing. When you go look at major players in your market space, you simply do not see "Shop" anywhere. Because your your left side navigation blends in as much as it does, I think it actually hi-lights "Shop" even more so.

Lets use Toys R us as an example here. Just as you have your site set up the category links are down the left side. but notice how on a white background, those blue links set off the page. Scrolling across the links notice the color change, and they happen to be using a "mega menu" which navigates their end users to the section they are interested in quickly.

I looked a bit at the inner workings of your site a bit. using your 'Lego and Building' section as an example. you have 4 pages of product. I would expect to first be landed on a category page when clicking 'Lego and Building'. Star Wars, City, Super Hero etc would be the sub categories that make the search for product that much more targeted. And for end users targeted navigation gets them to what they want faster.

A UX ( User Experience ) rule of thumb is having the ability from anywhere on the site to navigate to a specific product in 3 clicks or less. Adding Sub Cat Navigation to your site would pretty much put you in there.

Your Logo... Again this is a Wordpress thing. They like to drop it below the top bar and above the navigation in most cases. In your instance I would really probably remove the header section all together leaving your top bar being the Nav Bar. I would then introduce your company logo within that bar. I wrote up a tutorial a while back on how to do this here: CSS to Customize the Mystile Theme The specific directions for this may be slightly different for your theme, but probably not that far off.

Right now if you really look at your logo and the amount of space it is taking it is consuming 25% of your above the fold space. Looking again at Toys R Us they have their integrated in a Nav Bar so its not "Taking Space" it is simply a part of the existing space.

Hope that Helps

And if you need more help with some other modifications let me know.
