A/B testing landing pages cheaply
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I have been building some landing pages bridge pages over the last week and have three different designs with different variations
The aim of the page is just to get the user to click through to an offer

I tested a page out with bing traffic and got a 25% CTR
I want to bring this up to about 50%

However with the niche of the website bing traffic costs a lot and it will take me a while to fully test each page

is there away to cheaply send enough traffic to my site to test each landing page

Is it worth buying large traffic packages to send traffic to the site
I am not looking for conversions for this just want to test click through rate

Basically is there away to real but cheap and maybe low quality traffic to the site that will give me a real insight to the sites CTR before send more quality traffic to it

I think Facebook might be a good option for this. Social media traffic comes to be lower quality, and cheaper as a result.

I second Sean in that I'd look into Facebook advertising, however, if you set up targeting correctly and create a good ad then I think your quality will still be solid.

You should be more focused on conversions and ROI. Just because a page has a high CTR doesn't mean it will perform the best.

Hence the term CONVERSION rate optimization. I agree. Always have ROI in mind when running experiments.

Keep in mind that different traffic sources are going to convert at a different rate (generally speaking). Therefore I normally like to test the traffic that you think you are going to use.

If you're looking for cheaper traffic, facebook and native platforms (such as Taboola and Revcontent) is cheaper than Bing.

Another option is to test the page sequentially. Meaning put one page up and track the conversion rate. Then replace it with the new page and determine which one is the winner. While you have to be careful with things like seasonality, or traffic spikes, it is a quicker way of finding a winner than A/B split testing.

I've done conversion work for many big companies such as Expedia, The Boston Globe, Kobo Books, Firestone and more...

I suppose it concerns a squeeze page and not a presell page. In order to get a CTR of 50% you need highly targeted traffic. Therefore, you should know who your targeted audience is and where you can find this audience. Thereafter you can make split testing to improve the CTR further. If you sell leads this is the way to go. However, if you want to sell products to your leads, you have to focus on sales and you should make a funnel with a squeeze page and a low ticket product in order to identify the buyers on your list because it is very unlikely that 50% of ad clicks concern buyers.
If it concerns a presell page of a product, I highly recommend to analyze the sales page of the product first by using a spy tool like Loading site please wait... and look for the traffic streams on the sales page. If the traffic stream for ads is negligible don’t try ads because you will not succeed. Instead follow best practice.
If you want cheap and targeted traffic, try PPV networks. Sure PPV networks ask for a deposit before you can start in order to select serious publisher. However, there are PPV networks that don’t ask for a deposit of $1000 like leadimpact.com but much less like directCPV.com and clicksor.com.
