Why your home page copy is letting you down.

One of the services that I provide is writing home page copy for my clients. While, in the grand scheme of things, all pages of website copy are important and it's vital that you get it right, many people misunderstand just how important home page copy is. They think a few quotes, an inspiring sentence or some appealing images are all their target market needs to pick up the phone and ask some questions.

This is a big mistake!!

I've seen many websites in my time, some with good copy and some which are downright atrocious! I wanted to share with you a few things that people get wrong on a regular basis so that if you're wondering why people aren't hanging around on your site, it could be the copy that's your problem.

Here are a few common things that I see and its worth checking your home page to make sure this isn't you!

There's no copy at all.
Many web designers aren't focused on SEO and don't realise the power copy holds over your audience. If your template allows, aim for approximately 200-300 words of copy to give your audience something to read when they get there.

It doesn't flow.

You need to tell people what your product is, how it can help them and how to get it. Beginning, middle and an end. Your copy needs to be presented in a logical way so that people reading it don't get confused.

You don't talk about the benefits.
People are ONLY interested in how you can help them. They don't care about all the fancy stuff that your product or service offers, they just want to know how you're going to make their life easier. Tap into the need of your target market and talk about that.

There's no call to action.
You've pitched your product, you've convinced someone its time to buy but haven't given them an instruction! Contact Us Buy now and Subscribe buttons are often missed sending your viewer straight to your competitor,

Writing good copy takes time and patience and it isn't an instant thing your website is often the first impression that someone has of you so if you cant write (or don't have the time to), for goodness sake pay someone who can!!
