Default Pop Ins emphasis?

What do you guys think about using pop ins (the kind that are in the same window as your page) to emphasize a benefit like a limited time sale or something like that? Could it be effective or annoying. Say you set it to go off 30 seconds or a minute after someone lands on the page, do you think it would help, or just get in the way. Any opinions?

I would say that it depends on your market. In some niches, like how to make money on the Internet, it gets used a lot and just becomes annoying. In other niches, it might be more of a novelty, so would work better. On the other hand, the fact that it is still being used (and seems to be on the increase) SHOULD indicate that it works.

As is usually the case, it's something to test.

I think I'm reading something interesting, and then you hide it. Now I have to figure out how to close this window, so I can get back to what I'm reading.

Terribly annoying . Like Cdarkock suggeted if the copy is as interesting as it should be then the pop up or pop in is just distracting.

I always find it awfully annoying. If I start reading a copy and this distracting thing comes up I will just close the window. On the other hand if the copy is very engaging I will keep reading it but I would really think twice before buying from it because of this annoyance.

You guys are geniuses. It makes perfect sense, why would I want to annoy someone who is engaged in my copy, on the off chance I will entice someone who isn't as interested in my offer.

Don't assume. If you assume it makes an a** out of you and your sales page. Set up a split test with Google Optimizer and see which one converts better.
