Or get on Bottom Line's list. BTW, A General Comment: I don't know what your experience level is, or where your copy will be running. But I can tell you that if you write in the alternative health market in the U.S. and don't know and follow FDA guidelines for writing that kind of copy, both you and your client will be in a world of legal trouble with the U.S. Government. Same applies to the financial markets here. They are both full of FDA minefields which can land you both with heavy fines, or even in jail. I'm not kidding. I know that England is just as strict, if not more so. Can't speak for Australia. I'm not a huge fan of AWAI, but if you're new to the field, their course on writing for the alternative health market may be an eye-opener for you. I'd strongly recommend getting it if you haven't written for this market before. And make sure your client has a good, knowledgable lawyer on tap. |

Makepeace and Anglade-Cole are both top-rung specialists in this sort of thing, supplements in particular. In the states it's pretty easy to get these mailers sent to you in the mail. That's no way to tell which are controls and which are tests, but if you're just getting started I'd recommend reading most of what comes your way... stuff that is topical and current. The trouble with the Makepeace swipes is they are dated - they were controls but were taken out of circulation because, presumably, they weren't working well anymore. Of course he often wrote subsequent controls for the same supplement merchants. The point is that for this market you should be looking at the really current stuff to grasp the sort of appeals being used in today's market. Behind some post offices you'll find dumpsters where people with P.O. Boxes dump junk mail they don't want. You'll find a lot of mass-market direct mail in those dumpsters, including supplement mailings. |

Don't assume that either the style or the content of formerly successful materials can safely or even legally be repeated now. There have been great recent changes (on both sides of the Atlantic) both in laws and regulations and (even more importantly) in the policies related to their enforcement. Specialist legal advice might be a very good thing, in this "niche".

DM mailers schedule X# of mailings per year. In each mailing, they'll often send out the existing control to one list, and a test piece to another list. The intervals between mailings allow them to analyze the results of both runs. The piece that pulls higher is the control, and gets mailed again. A control may only be a control for one or two mailings. Times change, things change, results change. OTOH, I've got a piece for insurance that's been virtually unchanged for 3 years now. About the only thing they've changed is the mailing format. They tweaked the headline about a year ago, and immediately went back to the original headline and have stayed with it. | |

A big thank you to all who replied, I have checked out Carline Anglade-Cole and Cayton and yes some good stuff in there. I am just about to launch in this field so the advice re legals is very timely. Getting on the mailing lists is tough as I don't live in the states, I have toyed with getting an office address though just to get on the lists! Then getting the material sent to me. but anyway, I digress, thanks again for the responses and help :-) Neil |
