I have been reading some of the famous letters from Gary Halbert, this guy is a ad copy genius. Just reading his letters you see how the copy just flows and is interesting to read. However when you read some of the ad copy on the web and sad to say no offense some wso offers miss the mark completly. I'm no expert myself but slaping some copy together will not make people buy, it's like saying pleaseeeee buy this from me! It repels you instantly, what have you found to write better copy? Mike. |

Some times it reminds me of American Idol or one of those shows where reallllllly bad singers actually are surprised when they are rejected. One of my fields is computers and when I see other "experts" that have ponderous or puny explanations I just sigh. Many ARE called but FEW are chosen. That's for sure. I see some copy that just amazes me and hits the buy button in me and other copy turns me off. I know some of this is due to my own buying personality or lack thereof but some of it is just annoyance because I can see the seams in the slapped together copy. The essence is in the rewriting and most people cannot manage to stay focused long enough to do that or don't absorb the knowledge to do that or are too lazy to do that or don't have the skill to do that. Or plain just don't care. |

Here's the thing about copy. Some people have a natural ability for it, others don't... Now, the guys with the natural ability, IF they want to get good they need to be studying, testing and writing all the time. Most IMer's, especially in the WSO forum or newbies, even if they can write a decent offer they're still pretty clueless on the dirty little details. It's the same in the offline world. Most people think they can write a sales letter or an ad... But "We can handle your taxes. Call xxx-xxxx" is NOT an ad. Or "Sale Ends 12/7"... That's not an ad either. The reason most copy sucks is because most people don't put in the work to figure out what makes an ad really work. They don't have time to, they're too busy running their business to put together optimal marketing. Paul's right on about selling the hamburgers to the starving crowd. WSO shoppers are impulse buyers, if they think for a second they'll learn something new they'll throw down the cash. I'm pretty happy that most people are clueless about copywriting. It's the most profitable skill on the planet, and if everyone could really write an effective ad we'd be losing a major edge. If you can write effective copy and know were the big money markets are, you can sell almost anything. -Scott | |
