First, it's likely the other site's webmaster will know it. And then, you're at the mercy of that webmaster. They can, for instance, change the image to something that is insulting and embarrassing.

Next, legal opinions of non lawyers won't keep you out of court. And the correct question is if you can a lawsuit be filed. And people have done that.

The right question to ask is does cheaping out by not hiring professionals end up costing you much more money.

The term for this is "hot linking".

Here's the important thing to know: images on websites are NOT public domain. They are assumed to be copyrighted by the owner -- whether it says so or not.

And you should have permission before using other folks' copyrighted material.

Let's take an example -- let's say it's pictures of Britney Spears being taken away in an ambulance appearing on the National Enquirer (NE) site (if they have one -- never checked, actually.). NE has likely paid MANY thousands of dollars to the paparazzi for that photo. They wouldn't take too kindly to you hotlinking to it.

Not at all.

Hope you now have enough facts to come to your own conclusions about what you should do. I'm not going to say, because I ain't a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV.
