Thanks alot for this tip. I am actually working on writing some copy and learning about the different ideas right now. This really helped me out and its hard not to agree because its true.

Great post. This is a topic I have thought about for a while. Eben Pagan has an interesting view on this. Statements that the prospect could disagree with, he calls "disconnects". To keep your reader "connected", you must always say things that cannot be directly argued with and instead elicit a response. He gives the example of telling someone to "feel the temperature in your hands" rather than "feel how hot your hands are". "My hands aren't hot!" or "My hands aren't THAT hot!" or "Are my hands hot?" or "How dooes he know my hands are hot?" might flash in the reader's mind, but no one has NO temperature in their hands. (Unless they have NO hands, then the 1st statement would be a disconnect!) These open, suggestive, indirect statements -- the kind used in hypnosis -- are very powerful copywriting. You hit the nail on the head with that, and that's easy to forget. HOWEVER .... You must give the illusion that you are saying something concrete and direct. Vague writing that is too suggestive and too abstract doesn't work, either. It's an extremely delicate balance. |

Thank you. You have just reminded me that some of the cleverest lines are the simplest, while still packing the biggest punch.

Excellent point. That's a reason why I try to avoid speaking in absolute terms. For example: Everyone knows that social media is the hottest marketing platform in town Maybe that statement is true. But if 1 single prospect doesn't even know what the heck social media is, this message will totally disconnect him. Something like this could be better: As you may be aware of it now, social media is the marketing platform in town... Some thoughts there... Jag | |

Elmer Wheeler's books - Tested Sentences That Sell and Sizzlemanship - are full of great examples of how to say something that catches attention and is easy to believe, and how to ask questions that connect with the conversation in the prospect's mind. I'm really surprised that we don't see them discussed more here. Really wonderful material. Ken, are you a Wheeler disciple? ![]() Chris |

I've avoided this thread because I already know everything! I had no idea that the title of the thread was actually the headline for an ad. So if the title of the thread took the advice given in the OP, shouldn't it say: "You may want to skip this thread if you know everything" ? -Ray Edwards |
