What's with the disappearing threads? I just wasted time writing a thoughtful reply to Mike Humphrey's wholly useful and friendly post about whose copy we all like to read... A perfect example of the kind of threads we ought to have MORE of here... Minutes later... POOF! It's gone. Now, I've gotten barraged lately by long time posters here asking me, as a mod, why their threads keep disappearing. Honestly, I have no idea. As I tell each of them, every time I get a "What happened to my thread?" PM... If a mod deletes it, that's almost always visible to us - with a comment as to why. And NONE of the threads in question are ever deleted by the mods that way. I can only assume some of you Member Moderators out there are reporting every thread with the name of someone you dislike. Frankly, it's childish and pathetic. Get a life and please allow those of us with one to make efficient use of ours. Why bother posting in threads that have a 15 minute shelf-life? Simple. I won't. And I'm not alone. |

Brian, thank you SO much for shedding some light on this. It TOTALLY explains why some completely innocuous threads are disappearing and quite frankly, you are right...it is childish. But it doesn't surprise me either. |

What I don't understand is, I was under the impression that member moderated threads did NOT get automatically deleted but went into a moderation area for the mods to look at and then decide if it should go or not. I guess that assumption is incorrect. |

Lowly subforum mods, not so. We also have no idea who and why someone gets banned (another source of frequent PMs). Brian

Where can we get a list of the mods for each forum? I'm sick and tired of contributing here and then having some pussy mod delete it. Who are these freaking mods? |

Vin, There's a list in the lower right corner of each sub-forum with the moderators names on it. Hope that helps, Mike |

In keeping with my personality type of "do it first, read the manual after", I had no idea members could get a thread deleted by serial button pushing. Or that anyone would be so incredibly petty as to actually spend time doing that. That has to be the lamest thing I've heard since yesterday's media firestorm at Rham Emanuel's use of "the r_ word". |

I don't think it's the mods - I think it is some vindictive member mods. It was posted here several times that you can "report" a post or thread more than once and I believe it's setup where a certain number/weight of reports will delete a post (don't know about a thread). If some trolls have learned that trick - that would explain it. And by "troll" I mean anyone who would target posts of another member. Seems we perhaps need an adjustment that would allow a member to click on the (!) only once per post - then if no one else reports it, he could do no harm. kay |

Brian, To answer your question about my thread... I hit the moderator button and asked for my own thread on fun copywriting to be deleted. While there were some quality posts in there, there were several flat-out pissy ones that were meant to derail the damn thread... like every other thread in this forum gets derailed. Then there was a few pissy PMs of people wanting to know why I wouldn't post a friend's sales letter online for them to read/swipe. Sorry, but there was a reason why Hostler took that sales letter down and I'm going to respect his wishes. Had I known he already took the letter down, I wouldn't have even mentioned it. I thought about it for a few hours after seeing what had been posted and I just decided to ask that the thread be deleted. I started the thread to create some fun and improve the mood around here. For people to actually contribute useful for everyone to enjoy. I didn't start it to watch yet another thread get pissed in by negative folks who have nothing better to do with their lives. I didn't start it to get a bunch of $hit from people about why I wouldn't post a friend's sales letter online after they had taken it down. Sorry to anyone who did contribute something useful to the thread of mine that got deleted. This time, the 'report to moderator' action was done by me for my own thread. Hope that clears things up a bit, Mike |

and I enjoyed it. So I share your pain here. It's my wish that we could at least be given a reason to why a thread is deleted or a person banned. So if there's something wrong, we know what not to do in future. But unfortunately, many a times, we won't know. Jag

Mike, I'm sorry about the thread being deleted. I hope it didn't have anything to do with my asking why sales copy just leaves me so cold. I honestly wanted to try to understand why I read these things and they just don't do anything to me. I did get some good answers that made a lot of sense, and I thank those posters. I just hope I didn't add to the mess.

good thread annihilated. Pity. Do copywriters frequently feel threatened or insecure that they have to be so negative? Jag

Mike - sorry that happened. There were some decent posts in that thread. Some of the bashing here - and some of the rude pm's being sent - is way over the top lately. kay

Well... there goes a perfectly good conspiracy. : ) Mike, yanking your own thread I can deal with. No problem, brah. Makes me a bit Polly Prissypants, now doesn't it? Ah well. |

the post John Taylor just made. Honestly, I'm afraid to hang out here anymore than I have. It seems, for whatever reason, this sub forum brings out a lot of the nasties. Sorry, but that's the way I see it. I thought Main Discussion was rough, but this place is like a war zone. Makes me sad to say the least.

Brian, When a member hits the report button, it sends a message into the Admin area. If enough people report the thread it will go into "Unmoderated" status and will be reviewed. If the reports seem to be justified then the thread will be nuked. (The usual outcome) Occasionally reported threads are "Approved" and will become visible to everyone again. It is very unlikely that threads/posts will be deleted without being reported by member(s). If anyone tried to game the system, it would become very obvious in the Admin area. Some people can be a little "enthusiastic" or even over-zealous. But no one member has the power or influence to delete threads/posts. John |

The best practice is to never say anything in a thread or a PM that you wouldn't say if standing in front of the person. My stance is if you can't make the statement in the thread - maybe it shouldn't be said at all. A long time ago I had someone posting "reasoned arguments" in a thread while also pm'ing rude and obnoxious comments to me. I posted his pm in the thread saying I preferred to answer in public. That ended that as it showed the true colors of the poster. I'm not suggesting that as an option - it was before we had "help desk". kay |

I think the serial button pushers should be outted. They should be forced to publicly say what their problem is with a post. I've had some pretty helpful posts (and a couple totally innocuous ones) disappear and after speaking to a couple different mods they have no idea why. If someone has a problem with a post and want it deleted the person getting deleted should automatically get a copy of the complaint. I don't even care if it's still deleted at that point... The OP should know who and why. |

| Not all the mods are listed there, though. There apparently are a number of other people with "Super-Mod" or Admin powers that police this section and the other parts of the forum.
