UPDATE: INTERVIEW WITH JOHN IS LIVE ON THE BLOG NOW. (LINK IN SIG.) Hey Warriors, I'm recording an interview with John Carlton tomorrow. I want to make sure the WF is represented. So tell me... if John sat down on the bar stool next to you, what one question would you ask him? I'm looking for curveballs. Something you've never heard him asked before. Let's have fun, but it's gotta be relevant to copywriting in some way. Kevin |

The first question I would ask is "What question do you thank I should ask you?" or possibly "What copywriting questions would you like to be asked - that nobody has ever asked before?" My second question would be "Can I be one of your copy cubs please?" :-) |

"If you were to write copy for a martial arts product, as I know you have, how would you go about preparing? Essentially, how would you coax out a story from your client?" I'm not even sure that makes sense, but there it is. |

What are some good questions to ask potential prospects before writing a sales message? Like, what are good survey questions to better get to know the target market.. what they object to concerning your product/service, what emotional triggers they have, etc. Thanks!

Ask him what he sees in this guy Kevin Rogers? And ask him, how come he ALWAYS manages to launch on a Jewish holiday. Peace. |

Ask him what he does to get the creative juices and motivation going before sitting to write copy. Does he write copy with music on in the background... or dead silence? If it's music, what's playing that "helps" John write great copy?

Some of these are content based. Some of these are to let Carlton open up and want to share. Depending on your goal, ask the apporpriate questions. That said, Pay attention: The more he shares about himself, the more he will enjoy the interview. For better questions, watch George Stoumboulopoulos The Hour. http://www.cbc.ca/thehour/guests.html#business He's interviewed lots of unique guests from all over the world and everyone commments he's one of the best interviewers in the business. He has a way of getting people to open up. Go through the archives, find someone you would be interested in watching an interview of and listen to his questions. Here are mine on the fly: What's one major thing you keep wanting start up copywriter's to understand but they never quite get? What are most copywriter's biggest sticking point either mentally or in practice of copy? When you look at the whole process of copywriting, what's the part that you enjoy the most? What are of your favorite "AHA" lightening strike moments in copywriting, meaning, what are some of your favorite lessons about copywriting and are there any stories about it that you feel comfortable sharing? (might not have time to do this because it could take the whole interview; great to use if you want the interview to continue beyond 1hour ![]() How are some of your favorite up and coming copywriter's that you feel new copywriter's should study and why? What should they be looking out for? How has your copywriting changed since the evolution of the internet? Why? |

What he would to re-build his business from scratch in 30 days? If he lost all his contacts, all his leveragable assets and no one knew who he was? He could use only the knowledge inside his head and let's say a budget of $100 bux. John Carlton's 30 day challenge! I think that would be great to hear! ![]() obviously he couldn't re-build his whole business in 1 month (or could he?) but I'm sure he could do some damage.. and I'm interested to hear how he would go about it! |

Hey all, The interview with John was incredible. A LOT of your questions made it in. (Turns out he sneaked a peek at this thread before the call. He was throwing out replies to some of your questions before I could even get to them.) John dove into the deep end on... -- His worst personal habit... -- His early career ghosting for Jay Abraham and writing fulfillment packages for Bencivenga... -- How great writers "remove yourself" from the copy (by thinking like the prospect)... -- Where John leans politically... -- What stopped him from quitting after his first day working with Halbert... -- The 2 greatest copywriters most of us have never heard of... -- Why you should never underestimate the power of "negative motivation"... -- The one thing new copywriters need to make it as a freelancer (HINT: You can't buy it.) -- The secret to tapping into your brain's dusty storage files... And on and on it went. Dude was on fire. The call even took some interesting side roads into topics like Jack Kerouac and the Beat Era poets, Tom Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, the rise of the Roman Empire, the Dada art movement and Shakespeare's true identity. Honestly, this is the most candid interview I've ever heard John give. It'll be up on the blog tomorrow. Thanks again for all your great questions. (John said he kinda misses kibitzing with ball-breakers like Subtle.) Kevin |

What words should you never use in headlines?? I know some copywriters will never use the word "learn" in headlines or bullet points because of negative associations the word can have. Learn - hard work, school, homework etc Ask him for a top ten list? Thanks |

UPDATE: I remade the button for you and added big red instructions. If you can't find it this time, see a doctor! : ) Kelby, There's a blue "play" button just under the bold font line that says: This is John Carlton more candid and introspective than you’ve ever heard him before. You're right, it is hard to see. In hindsight I should have chosen a button that stood out more, perhaps something in a black and red. But it's there, I promise. Thanks for your feedback and diligence. It'll be worth it. Kevin |
