Default Ever Get A Reminder Of How Little You Really Know About Writing Copy?

I'm usually a one man show.

I chat with other copywriters frequently, I rarely discuss specific projects with them though. Just business, product ideas and things like that.

Last night, I talked with Rick Duris for quite awhile.

I'd never talked to Rick before.

I showed him some copy I was working on. And then he kicked my teeth in.

Not literally of course. But he pointed out obvious flaws that I SHOULD have seen. He gave me all kinds of ideas for stories I could use as metaphors, how to position the product, way too much advice to list here.

He opened my eyes to how deep the rabbit hole really goes.

It's like some guys aspire to be in the PGA. Other guys aspire to be Tiger Woods. The best of the best.

Rick is a guy who's at that elite level.

When I started writing copy I wanted to be "good".

Until last night I wanted to be "great".

Now I realize there's a whole other universe beyond being "great"... And you can get there if you really want it.

This post isn't to talk Rick up, although I very much appreciate his time.

It's about reaching out and connecting with people. EVERYONE on this planet has something they can teach you. And you have something you can teach everyone.

And when you reach out and make connections, things happen.

You become inspired. You see the world from entirely new perspectives. You realize there are things in this world that you're oblivious to, but other people can show you how to understand them.

Point being, if you're a one man show, start reaching out to people. Make those connections.

You'll build relationships that will last a lifetime. You'll run across opportunities that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

Probably common sense to a lot of you. But big things can and do happen when you reach out and connect with people.

Nice attitude, Scott. Everyone can teach you something if you're open to the teaching. Certainly found that true in my experience on planet Earth.

About four years ago I was part of a copywriter's mastermind
group with a few members of the now defunct copywritersboard
and you do learn a lot from each member. No man is an
island for sure and how many times are you going to
find people interested in talking about this specialty?

At least I get some conversation with my coaching members
and here as well.

Thanks, Scott.

That was a very nice gesture and generous for you to say. Especially on an open forum like this.

You are right. It *IS* about reaching and connecting with people.

To me, that's what copywriting is REALLY all about. Touching people in ways that improve or enhances their lives... that provokes them to take some sort of action... that gets people to think.

Thank you, again Scott. You've touched me.

Nice post, Scott.

Classy of you to give props like this. +1

I also had a great chat with Rick on Skype the other day.

Great guy...

Then there's that damn Kevin Bidwell...

Another smart feller...

Not many people know this about Kevin, and
he's doesn't tell many people about this...

...but he knows Toby McGuire's Butt Double.

It's true... Ask him.

: )

Well, that's something to put on your marketing/copywriting resume, Kevin. LMAO.

I don't really need a reminder: I know how little I know.

I'm just surprised people are willing to pay me to write their copy...

But I'm not complaining as long as they're happy.

I thought he WAS Toby McGuire's Butt Double... or was that Toby McGuire's Double Butt...??
