I saw another thread where Vince said, "Like shooting fish in a barrel... with a cannon!" I often see these kind of 'down home' phrases in copy -- and I think it's pretty effective. So, I did a quick search + came up with this... The Homespun Collection of Catch Phrases, Slogans & Idioms by Don Schaal (Book) in Humor (not an affiliate link) I think it'd be a good resource to keep handy -- those phrases make copy stand out + get remembered sometimes. Cheers. -- TW |

I will try to find a link to it, but Clayton Makepeace has an excellent list of catch phrases and cliche terms that every copywriter should have a copy of. --later-- OK - here's the link. The #1 Way to Electrify Your Ads! It's free. Download it, and spend some time scanning through it. I'm not big on swipes, but this is definitely something that I refer beck to when ever I'm feeling dry. |

A good homespun homily can be real effective in your copy... just don't overdo it or you'll end up sounding like Jed Clampet! One or two will do the job. |

| On the other hand, Paul Harvey (broadcasting legend) seems to be doing ok -- At the age of 87, he signed a TEN YEAR contract, at (I think) 10-million/year -- or something like that -- and he's the king of homespun.

And Huell Howser, "California Gold," is about as folksy as they get. I think I even have heard him use "Gol' Durn" a time or two!

TW wrote that exactly four months prior to Paul Harvey's death.
