Linking with other web site url?

Is it illegal to link other web site url to own web site page??? If any body knows this fact, let me know.

Can I assume your just linking this site to yours for say an example, or reference? If your not trying to use someone else work as your own, then I see no reason for it to be illegal.

There is some discussion regarding linking sites together for self serving purpose that will get you in trouble with the search engines. However, not really understanding what your wanting to do makes it hard to give a good answer.
