I don't know if you tuned in to the Piers Morgan show last night (Tuesday 18) but Howard Stern shocked me when he revealed that he has never cheated on his wife. Who would imagine that a sex-crazed personality like Howard Stern would be so 'holy'. It simply means that his whole on-air personality is just that--a personality that he knows would sell. Although I don't subscribe to the persona he chose you can't ignore the fact that he is a great marketer. He tells of his struggle to get noticed and how he finally broke through the ceiling. In fact, he also gave himself the name "King of Media" and said that he was shocked when people started addressing him by that title. So what's the lesson here: If your copy doesn't have personality and appeal (sometimes controversy would do it) then it won't get noticed. And you don't have to wait to be crowned by anyone before you are a king. -Ray Edwards |

Exactly. That's why I branded myself "The Copy Nazi". Some find it offensive (you included I seem to recall) but they sure as hell remember me. And the ones that dig it - really dig it. But you can't please everybody - so why even try?

I saw a little bit of that interview. I like how he lit up Jay Leno!

Good point guys about crowning, branding yourself, and claiming expert status. If you don't no one else is going to, that's for sure. As an expert you get paid a lot more. Dan Kennedy teaches on this subject a lot. As far as Stern goes, I personally think he probably was lying in that interview... |

If your interested, the movie Private Parts is essentially a biography of his career. It's based on his book with the same title. Yeah, a lot of it is just on-air persona. He figured out what worked and worked it even harder. A lot of people don't get this about radio personalities - they are characters. Stern figured out what his audience wanted and delivered. Not cheating on his wife, I don't know why it's so unbelievable. |

Stern figured out what personality would appeal to the largest audience. As a copywriter you're also trying to figure out what copy, voice or personality is going to connect with your target audience. | |||
