As a rookie copywriter, what categories of copywriting should I be able to master?

Pay-per-click ads
Squeeze pages
Review pages

Go on Elance or Odesk... and bid $50 for direct mail Sales Letters... and do it for the experience.

Plus, a lot of these clients will be businesses selling to businesses... an easier client to deal with than the person with the latest traffic-cash-life-changing-only-$7-to-the-first-ten-who-buy.

Get some books on direct mail letter writing and study them... and refer to them as you write.

Over time you will get better and better and if you can make cost effective sales or generate qualified leads -where printing, postage & fulfillment are involved... you will be able to make even more sales on the Internet where the cost of reaching a customer is much less.

There are many offline copywriting categories too, like product labels, commercial scripts, that sort of thing. Probably not what you're after though if you're focus is online only.

Start with youtube, searching for "direct mail" or "copywriting" will give you thousands of results. Also search for Gary Halbert and Dan Kennedy, these are 2 of the best in that area.

This is not a tutorial, but it's an excellent FREE, 234-page book on the subject ...
