Possibly. But do you have any evidence to back the claim? I often work with women in copy editing positions, and they do it well.

I disagree, simply because some people make assumptions that, by nature, all women are generally more emotional and intuitive, and I have met more than enough women and men in my life to know this isn't the case. Speaking more specifically, I think better copywriters are those who follow the basic rules and create artistic differences that work effectively for the businesses they provide copy for. |

I read an article which stated that women make better writers, in general, than men, beause they're naturally better communicators. If that's true, I suppose it encompasses copywriting, too.

Who are these so called "experts"? Anyway, I don't think it's gender specific. There are great male and female copywriters. Here's my take on it... How To Write Sales Copy | How To Write Like A Girl… -Scott |

I always bristle at claims like this. It is just terribly unproductive and unhelpful to try and generalize about what men are like and what women are like-- you can't just put an entire gender in a box and expect it to be true, no matter what your claim is. I think being thoughtful, insightful, verbally agile and a good business person are the things that make a good copywriter. Both men and women are capable of this.

I'd give a provisional yes. You got that big corpus callosum, which is a huge advantage when it comes to figuring out and pushing hot buttons. On average, women are better at seeing things from the customer's POV. It's a provisional yes because, again on average, women copywriters seem to me more timid. Less likely to go for the high note. |

Another generalization that I think is unfair, but let's go with it for a minute... If women tend to be BETTER but more timid, does that mean inferior men are just brash and grabbing at opportunities? It seems like, if this were really true, women would be making a lot more money in the end. The crappy men would be fired and the women would pick up the slack. From what I can tell, that's not how it works in real life.

I could not agree more that it is the content that speaks, not the gender of the person writing it. I also don't think we have any actual data about women writers vs. men to go on here. But anyway, can we just talk about what makes good writing good? We're all people, people.

Half-assed brash beats talented timidity when it comes to results. Copy has to seize and hold attention first. It's silly to pretend gender differences don't exist. Male and female brains evolved to perform different roles in order to assure the survival of our species. We like different things, prefer and perform better at different tasks...ON AVERAGE. Populations are predictable, individuals are not. Action films primarily appeal to, and their marketing is geared towards, men. Conversely, everyone knows what a 'chick flick' is. Hollywood would argue that it's QUITE productive, and profitable, to generalize. | |

According to my personal experience with women, they should be. It's the art of making you believe you want something, but it got in to your he'd by her somehow. If you know what I mean. And all this is total nature to women. That's a reason we love then and can't stand without them. |

I certainly feel there is plenty of room for good women copywriters - because there aren't that many of them. Copy can be decidely scientific, meaning going on intuition (men call it "gut instinct") can bomb (bombing is bad). None of the characteristics of a great copy-artist are exclusive to men, yet the simple fact is the field remains primarily male. This also applies to sales in general, because just like the commission-only sales rep - and I did that for years - it's a high reward and high risk career. From my own experience, 9 out of 10 self-employed sales reps are men. Women tend hate the unpredictable and often unsocial hours but mostly the "Sell or you don't get paid" element. It's a stereotype perhaps, yet it does seem to be the case that women lean more towards safety and security. (Artificial real estate booms don't count) As an aside, many agencies have gone out of their way to work with female copywriters. Some had success, many didn't, because there's a lot more to great copy than gender. The MAJORITY of people aren't suitable for a career in copywriting, including "good with words" people of either gender. As one wag put it, "The only way that ##### could sell anything is if we draped her naked over the product..." I don't think this thread would be complete without mentioning Collette (*hugz*) as she deffo has her 'copy chops'. Fact is is though, the field has been wide open to women since the 70's or earlier - they just haven't made a significant dent. Probably more a matter of choice than ability. All those ideas of creativity, intuition and great language skills are pretty much useless for copy. In the real world you have to dumb your language down, do the research and be damn careful with creativity. "Creative", like humor, can be great when it works, it's just that most of the time creativity only sells to the client, not the prospect. Which was far too serious an answer for such-a-tongue in cheek thread... hey, I'm in a pondering kinnda mood today. :P New glasses or a funky new lazer printer..? Mmmm.... Perhaps I just need more ink ![]() AC |

I don't think so. Is there any proof? Isn't this a stereotype? It might be true that on average women are better, but I still believe the best copywriters are men.

I do know that in general women seem to be better at gauging and tugging at emotions, and men are a bit more skilled when it comes to business negotiations and not backing down. Always exceptions to this. And.... I'm pretty sure emotional tugging is what's going on here. I say well done |

As much as I would looove to agree with this post, I would have to say that its nothing more than a playful kick at the ant pile. ![]() Although the previous poster is on to something. Most of the big shots, old or new, and even any copywriter I've ever studied has been male. I think in reality gender shouldn't matter, but apparently it does. It really doesn't matter at all (especially on gender). What matters here is the attitude, dedication and "outside-the-box" thinking you have. Brains are equal, just put an extra gas on it and you're good to go. |

I'd say it comes down to personality type rather than just sex (although sex probably has a lot to do with personality type). I find that people who can look at situations objectively and really analyze the different components of them are the ones who are great copywriters.
