Default Questions For A Copywriter

Hello, I'm new to this site. I tried another site, copywriting.com, but it was no help. As I stated I'm very new here and new to copy-writing in general. I've been researching it for a few weeks now and am currently using the AWAI Accelerated Program.

The reason for this post is because a friend of mine has talked to a few of his friends in the business and they are going to talk to me about being a copywriter. Each of them has a lot of experience in the field and I wanted some tips on what kind of questions I should ask when I meet with them. This isn't an interview for a job or anything but I'd love to appear prepared with questions when I meet them. My friend also told me they are pretty busy so I should have questions at hand. Any questions or even advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ask them: Can you show me results/testimonials from recent clients? Can I contact those clients if need be?

Hey Casas,

My advice would be: learn what you can from your books, and make a note of anything you don't understand as you read. That's the stuff you'll need to hear elucidated by a professional.

Other general questions would be things like how they get clients, their work process, etc. Just basically ask yourself what you don't understand about getting started in the profession, and ask them that.

Thanks for the tips. Like I said, anything is appreciated and useful. I'm just glad someone replied because the other forum site I was on didn't even get a post. Thanks again, if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Ask them which books they studied. If they drop names like Claude Hopkins, John Caples, Jeffrey Lant, Jay Abraham, and/or Bob Bly, then listen to what they say.

Otherwise, get the books by these authors and study them yourself.

At the end of the day they can have all the experience (or so called) in the world but it boils down to RESULTS...

You want to find out if all that theory they have learnt has been applied and put into practice.

So rather bluntly I'd be asking them:
Tell me about the exact RESULTS you have achieved with your previous Clients?

Of course you can also ask them who/what had the biggest influence in their career in terms of learning/development.

Goodluck!

You might want to ask them what THEIR process for writing copy is.

The books you'll read may layout an ideal or theoretical process or workflow. But every writer works a bit differently.

asking this question will get them talking about themselves (which we all like to do) and will be give you insights too.

Hi Casas,

Questions you can ask...What kind of qualities do they look for in a copywriter? What are their pet-peeves or frustrations dealing with copywriters? What are their expectations? What are they most focused on; the price, the turn-around time or communicating with the copywriter?

Hope this helps!
Joni

Sorry Casas...I miss understood what you were asking!
Let's try this again...

Ask them what their expectations are in dealing with clients.
How to deal with a client that is not so easy to work with.
How to price your copy projects when first starting out.

The questions I previously posted could be used when you get your first clients!!

Again, I apologize!
Joni

I was in a similar situation few months ago. My advice would be to ask them about their results because it counts more than anything else.
Also, you can make a note of your questions but talk to them with an open mind.
