| Learn to speak with a British accent FAST! Hi everyone, I recently posted a thread about a product I am marketing (link above). I got a few reviews from fellow warriors and some of them sort of pointed out what the main issues on the sales page may be. The product is an e-course on how to learn the British accent, written by a dialect coach. Just for technicality's sake: the term British accent is used for SEO purposes, as that is what a lot of potential customer search for. Now, the main point that was made, is that the concept/ headline appears 'unrealistic'. The headline reads:'Give Me Just 13 Minutes a Day and I Will Give You a British Accent'. It says 13 minutes a day, which implies that it is enough to spend a few minutes a day, every day, to work on the accent. This study rule goes for just about anything one wants to learn. The headline is meant to show that you can break down the learning process into an easily manageable 'daily task', rather than having to dedicate hours and hours every day. It could therefore just as well say 15, 20, 30 minutes or 1 hour a day. Now, my question is: Would you agree that the current concept makes it look to unrealistic, so much so, that people actually interested in buying this course are put off by how 'easy' it is made to look? Do you think that people would much rather see that perhaps more work than 13 minutes a day is required- as that is what they expect. If so, I will change the headline and general concept. Which one of the following headlines do you think would be better? Do you have any other suggestions? Possible head lines: Learn the British accent- FAST! Master a British Accent in as little as 3 days. Master a British Accent in as little as 7 days. Master a British Accent in as little as 2 weeks. Learn the British accent in as little as (any of the above) How I taught a complete novice a British accent in 2 weeks. I look forward to some healthy constructive criticism. You can guess which headline will work better. However, the better approach is just to start testing the headlines on your site. |

tip: add a lead-in. Chicks Dig Accents... [Enter any of those boring headlines HERE] You are making the deadly assumption that whatever your product is, people will find a reason to buy it. This is untrue. A few will. Most won't. Any eighth grader in America could tell you -- while they may get a big fat "F" in English class -- they don't need a course to speak with a British accent. A cartoon British accent, sure. But an accent nonetheless. Personally, I'd target this to Indian teleworkers and customer service people, perhaps indian business people. Explain the benefits of the British accent FIRST, or learning it in three weeks, three days, or three hourse makes no sense. |

I'd be interested in hearing how you came to the conclusion there is even a market for this. I don't think I've ever run into a single soul who was desperate to have a Brittish accent. I'd guess there are occasionally actors who might be interested but other than that, where is your market?

I'm not skeptical that there is a market, but it may be small, dispersed and not cost-effective to reach. The question I'll put to you most sharply: do you have keyword research to back up the belief that people are searching for this information? I've lived in Los Angeles and known my share of actors, and many of them will take whatever good work they can get and many can pull off a passable English accent. One friend is a dialect expert as well - it can greatly enhance an actor's ability to get a callback as the question "can you x?" is used in casting calls to rather arbitrarily separate actors into callback and no-callback groups. The ability to speak with a foreign accent can be an advantage in dating. Anyway - I looked over the copy and found it a tad dull and repetitious. One trick is to make a massive list of all the clever things you could do with a plummy English accent. This letter seems to lack that element of telling the reader why they should want this skill. |

One thing I would suggest about this is that the term 'British accent' could cover all types of accents over Great Britain! Maybe switch 'British' with 'English' and specify what type of accent it is... From the video on your page it is an accent of someone who lives in the south of England and is reasonably well-spoken. Mention this so that people know what they are purchasing. Hope this helps a little! |

Michael, I gave you a concrete way to handle this subject by writing how long it takes...as in 10 days, 30 days, 90 days etc. You put the number in and tell them what level of proficiency they will have after the given time. Give examples as to what they can do with their new skill. Still have the amount of time per day. Best, Ewen [QUOTE=michaelv03;4278817]Learn to speak with a British accent FAST! Thanks very much for your advice. Trouble with saying how long it takes and what users will achieve after any given period is that it varies widely. There are some people who can get a good grip on the material in the course in a few hours, whereas others may take months. Although the course is great, it does depend on the individuals input/ effort as well. This is way it seemed like a good idea to put 13 minutes a day, as this rule applies to everyone and does not make any promises and because it does not say how long exactly one has to work on it (other than the 13 minutes daily). You see, if I say 'Master a British accent in 2 weeks with only 13 minutes practise a day' it will be misleading and make it look even more unrealistic. What do you think? Thanks again for now, Ewenmack. Michael

There is what I would call a niche market for it and surprisingly enough the biggest market has traditionally been the USA. It's not only actors that have an interest, but there are many different reasons why people would want to learn to speak with this accent. They are either 'fans' of the accent or want to sound less 'American'. whatever their reasons, they are interested. We even had Americans buy it that were planning to move to the UK and simply wanted to try and 'integrate' more etc etc However, of course there are also other markets outside the US.

You have to try several methods to see which on provides you with the best results. It really depends on your target audience on what type of headline will really work.

I say old chap, dashed if anyone really cares how long it takes to get a good old blighty accent. Of course you can mention the speed in one of those new fangled sub head thingies. Point is, you need to tell the good people just what a damn good thing a British accent is. And what it will do for them and the doors that it opens. For instance. You’ll get top class totty. Best seats at Ascot, Wimbledon, Hendley or Ronnie Scotts Club. Instant respect from all the riff raff. Or a bloody good job in the diplomatic service (maybe not now days with all those damned cuts but you get the idea). One copywriter chappie made a fortune by saying something like – “Speak French Like A Diplomatic” so imagine what a top notch Brit accent will do. Jot down these thoughts and think of some others and you should see a jolly good response. |

There's a lot of reasons someone might want a British accent (dating / acting / desire to quit office job and begin work as international superspy) and you can work a story around any of them. I'd expect you'd have more success picking one particular reason and targeting your marketing toward that market rather than going for a catch-all approach, so pick one and explain why not having a British accent is the reason they're single / poor / a 42-year-old balding paper-shuffler and not James Bond.

I think that split testing is the way forward but that 13 minutes is a little unrealistic and would put a lot of people off. Try 30 minutes a day as this is a little more taxing. As people are identifying your potential market as mainly actors, (creepy daters) and casual interest you don't need to be offering a lighting fast solution. So try something a little more realistic. Also I think the video idea - showing off your own spiffingly good accent would definitely be a sales winner. Other than that bally good luck to you old bean Sam |

Madonna should've bought this a few years back! Lol...worst English accent I've ever heard. She wasn't acting at this point. Just wanted to sound British. Ended up just sounding foolish! Cheers, Tony.
