Words, words, words, they can make us or break us. Words can motivate us, hypnotize us, can even entice us or trick us. A wordsmith studies emotional triggers. Words that make us react in a certain way. Not just great copywriters but lawyers, speech writers, script writers, poets, songwriters as well. A contract could be written up with so many loopholes in plain view that would be invisible to the average person. A skilled copywriter could make you invest money you do not have to spare and not only that go for the upsell as well! Funny how we remember a baby's first words and a dying mans last words. Some words are so simple like I love you, I hate you, or whatever! but they can still have a great impact. Even the wrong derogatory word used at the wrong time to the wrong person could make the difference of someone going to sleep in their own bed or a hospital or a jail cell even. We have to choose our words carefully because words can be, well....dangerous. I feel like the Gun Lobby ...words do not kill people, people kill people? So there is no liability when your words get someone to be a human puppet? Cyber bullying was not even a word not too many years ago. How about Palin's infamous Don't Retreat...Reload! Powerful words indeed but no one has any responsibility for words whether it means getting a person to spend their last dime or someone acting in a fit of violence over words they that read. Should use of words come with a disclaimer? Of course not right? Caution! These words you are about to read could cause you to do something you really can not afford or will regret later. ![]() For us marketers there are keywords, titles, buying words, captions, and emotional words. We should all try to master words but just like Jedi warriors some will use words for good and some for bad on the dark side. I like reading all the marketing emails I receive each day and notice which one got me to click it open the fastest or at all. I think the winner is always the "You Got Money!" email...I love those words. Do you think words can be dangerous? |

What a fantastic analysis of words! I loved reading that and your post prompted me to reply! Words are extremely powerful and as you said, their effects can be very damaging. Sometimes you can say things to people which no matter how hard you try, can't make them forget. And sometimes people say things to you that you hold onto for the rest of your life - the good, the bad, the ugly. Words have the ability to make or break relationships. Somethings are better left unsaid, but when they are said, they can cause a great deal of pain or problems. But it's not just the words we choose to use, its the WAY we use them and HOW we say them that creates the impact. Sometimes we can say something is a particular way and it gets taken out of context. Like someone in my family who is considered by everyone to be tactless - because she means one thing and says another and easily offends people! And afterwards she gets upset that she did so - but for some reason or the other, she doesn't realize that its HOW she says things that offends. Even your tone and your pitch when communicating adds to your words - in short, its not just words, its all the emotions and intentions attached to them that make the difference. Anyone seen a film called 'Let him have it?' - if you haven't, then as a copywriter, you need to watch it. A fine film based on a huge misunderstanding because of four words: 'Let him have it' Watch it and you'll know exactly what I mean. |

The power of words was a lesson my grandmother taught me many, many years ago with a simple statement, "Put your brain in gear before you put your mouth in motion." M E |

Very good points you make. The tone we use and how we say certain words that is so true. ![]() I remember watching some Benny Hill episodes where he uses words with double meanings and its just hilarious. Quote:
So simple yet Golden. | ||
