And Rick, your advice on research is pure gold - have you considered putting a product together? Like 'The Copywriter's Guide To impeccable Research' or something? I reckon everyone could learn from it!

What I've discovered is there are so many facets to keyword research, and copywriting research in general, it's mind boggling. There are so many websites and tools like Google Trends out there that add another piece to the puzzle. It's really amazing. I'm glad this piece was useful to you. - Rick Duris

Research is so much a part of copywriting. If you don't know your audience how are you supposed to write for them? Knowing what they want makes all the difference. Thanks for the links. I use many of them myself.

So far your advice has been gold - and yes I do think you should do some product on research. When we learn to write copy, it's all-consuming and we just concentrate on the writing... ...and have to figure out the rest for ourselves! I think anything which makes our life easier and our work easier is certainly worth it and would be a welcome addition to any serious copywriter who wants to get the big contracts and projects! When I do marketing reports, they are pretty in-depth - usually taking me several hours to put together and contain more than enough information for any company to take it away and use it as a blueprint for their marketing. I'll check out Amazon.com for trends, magazines, Facebook, LinkedIn and forums etc, as well as Ezine... but what you've provided has added a whole new dimension to the whole research thing. I've worked out the marketing and positioning to a tee, but have to admit the stuff you've shared about research has been a real eye-opener! Hope to see more of it!

There's a part within Adwords called macros. You may know about it, I didn't until yesterday. What it does is allow the headline to change in your ad to match the searcher's term. This means it becomes dynamic and therefore increases your quality score, increase clickthru's, higher placement and lower cost per click. Then there is another whole layer of testing in the conversion to sales. Some keywords may get more clickthru's but covert less into sales/optin's than the other keywords. So lot's of places to test and measure! Best, Ewen |

I think the content itself plays an important role in copywriting, and it is closely connected with research. To know the audience is good, but is not enough to gain their attention and coming back. Knowing the subject and audience makes the difference.

Rick, I see your original post has been deleted, are there plans to release the information as a WSO? I didn't get a chance to view it, but this post was recommended as a resource to check out for doing copywriting research...it would be nice to see what you previously had suggested. ![]() Cheers, ~Dexx |

Unfortunately, there are no future plans. Sometimes, I share a bit too much and I have to pull back. This is one of those times.

Research is obviously an important part of copywriting, and keyword research can help your copy be more visible in the search engines but, in my opinion, never should search engine optimisation tactics impede on exciting writing. There is a real risk that trying to make your piece keyword rich will just make it spammy and boring to read. I always think, the reader is my target, not the search engines. |
