Default Do you share my frustrations?

Hey guys,

Im gonna be open and honest here, I do have a WSO coming out that will help newbies and pros create copy and sales letters.

But this thread is in now way a presell.... I have JV's for that.

I just want your opinion on something, and if the moderates deem this thread inappropriate, they can delete it or just tell me and i'll delete it.

Here are my biggest frustrations with copywriting,

1) Its waaaay to expensive to hire someone GOOD $3000-$8000 per letter.
2) Doing it myself takes waaaay to much time and effort
3) I don't have the copywriting skills and vocabulary that a GOOD copywriter would have, and I get stuck on what to say most of the time.

Those are my biggest issues... and my question to you is,

What is your biggest frustration with creating or outsourcing copywriting for sales letters?

Joshua

Hi Joshua,

I understand the frustration clients have - paying $3-$8k for a letter.

Which doesn't guarantee a magnificent response - although the better the writer the more chance you've got.

There's also a frustration for copywriters - finding clients with good, excellent to outstanding products.

If the copywriter can see the product/service is brilliant - there's a good chance you can strike a workable deal.

Along the lines of a "reasonable" fee and a share of the profits.

If I was a client - I would choose my favorite writers and ask them if a "deal" is possible.

Hope this helps,

Steve

My biggest frustration with creating copy for sales letters is when the client changes the brief halfway through and decide need an entire new sales letter writing.

So...are you asking us for our frustrations so you can use them in your copy?

Pretty good idea.

Interesting what you say about vocabulary...I have a pretty good vocab, but I sure don't use it when copywriting. Simple words all the way.

My biggest frustration is when a client adds to my content after I deliver it. I mean, yeah, it's theirs now, but when some awful phrase that clearly doesn't fit is grafted on...there's No Way I'm using that as a reference. The work is "gone" as far as I'm concerned. This is one of the two main reasons I don't provide samples.

My biggest frustration is when a client doesn't heed my warning about the importance of split testing.

I've sold millions of dollars of products online, and split testing is how.

You're kind of between a rock and a hard-place, then. You don't want to shell out the dough for a professional copywriter. I can understand the fear that comes along with dropping $3K-plus on ANYTHING that's not 100% sure-fire.

But when you balk at spending a good amount of money on a pro, think about all the time and effort that goes into crafting an effective sales letter. Copywriters make their LIVINGS doing this stuff. The 40 or so hours THEY spend writing your sales letter will probably produce much better results than the 40 hours YOU would spend writing one.

Sometimes you've got to take a gamble and make a steep investment. You could lose money, sure. But you could also get results that net you way more money than what you spent on your initial investment.

Not trying to be hypercritical here... you've said that you don't have the copywriting skills or vocabulary that a good copywriter has. Just wondering.. how does your WSO help newbies and pros create copy and sales letters?

If you're hiring the right types of copywriters then it's an investment for your business and not an expense. The right type of copywriter can be a valuable member of your team and help you grow your business year after year.

Doing it right does take a lot of time and effort. That's why Good-Great copywriters charge what they do.

They can charge what they do because they're in demand. For the top-quality copywriters, it's been a seller's market for decades and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

You need to think of it in terms of your own ROI. If you invest 30-40 hours of your time to craft a salesletter that sells a product of yours that your target market WANTS, then your return on investment for your time can be very, very good.

I started studying marketing and copywriting as an offline business owner in the early 1990's. That investment of time and money has produced exponential ROI for my businesses. When I decided to start helping other businesses with their marketing, the same skills allowed me to quickly become a full-time professional copywriter.

That's why they're GOOD at copywriting.

Seriously, the only way to develop good to very good copywriting skills is through study and repetition. It doesn't happen overnight for anyone.

Good question.

Bad graphic layouts can knock conversion rates down 25-30% so I'd suggest including some tips on graphic layout fundamentals for newer marketers.

Hope that helps,

Mike

I'll second that. Many an otherwise-excellent portfolio piece has met its death at the hands of a client after the final proofing.

Joshua, as for your predicament... you are an investor. Like any investor, you deal in risk and reward. If you're going to be spending $3000 on a sales letter, you should be confident that will be worth it for the returns it will bring in. If you're not confident in your ability to do due diligence and convince yourself a $3000 sales letter will produce a good ROI, well, don't get a $3000 sales letter. That what it boils down to.

Copywriting = investment. Always, always, always think in terms of ROI.
