Default signup vs register vs join vs create account

You have a membership site that offers free accounts. What is the best text to use on the 'sign up' button and links?

Obviously you need to test this with your site and audience, but generally speaking, is there any reason one should work better than the others?

Have you tested this, and if so, what were your results?

btw, I found this which suggests 'sign up' as it is most popular and therefor more likely to be what the users are used to / looking for

I do prefer to use the word create account for free. After creating your account for free in one month there is a monthly subscription. Using that you can have many audiences as you like. The more accounts that are created every other day the more income will come in your hands. Recently, I used that word create account for free I noticed that my mailbox are full of e-mails asking on how to do it. Then I refer them to create account there and upload your pictures and many more... a day later there are members who upgraded their plan then I earn money from them.

I prefer sign up, it sounds less trouble.

Create an account suggest you have to remember another password, if you remember the site in the first place. I am not suggesting your site is bad, it is just that we have all joined site and loved them for 5 minutes then completely forgot about them, and if we don't we foget the usernames and passwords.

Sign up is better.

Hi Gordon, thanks for your input!

I can see where you're coming from.

I was asking because I'm doing a total redesign and figured it would be an easy time to change it if there was some proven benefit of using one over the other.

I'm using signup now so I figure I'll stick with that. Thanks!
