10 Adverts That Shocked The World

I've just seen this in the Independent...

And yes, they really ARE shocking...

A poster from an anti-smoking campaign by Les Droits des Non-fumeurs - The Independent

I can't say I enjoyed going through these...

And some of them you'll agree are what can only be described as sickening and depraved...

I'll let you guys be the judge!

But in other sense these are some message for the society.
That which way are we going.
    These are really interesting.
Exactly what I thought - hence the added shock factor.

Did they work, though? I saw some research that suggested that shocking pictures actually increased the desire of a smoker for cigarettes - apparently it stimulates the same part of the brain that deals with the desire for nicotine.

That's sort of the reverse psychology tactic, playing with our fascination with morbidity.

The real unanswered question is - were they effective marketing for the subject/product they were developed for? Or did they just draw attention (and not necessarily in favor of the subject/product)?

No doubt some of the ads reaped creative industry awards and high-fives from fellow ad agency art directors but I doubt they were effective from a sales point of view.

But then I'm just an uncultured oaf who doesn't understand they were raising awareness and building brand synergy, darling . . .

      Yeah, right.

Hey, I enjoy looking at those kind of ads all day long, but if it was my money I'd take my ad budget elsewhere . . .

. . . until they could prove to me an image of a young man gulping his last breath on his death bed directly shifted ONE extra pastel-coloured sweater from Benetton's shelves.
