CHECK YOUR WRITING FOR FLESCH-KINKAID GRADE LEVEL (FK)

Don't be fool by awkward name. You can forget it now.

It means just testing your text for READABILITY. The LOWER, the BETTER.

Let's make it simple for you to remember. Books for children get FK 3 while good adult books get FK between 7 and 8,5.

An FK level close to 11 is considered moderately difficult to understand.
Does anybody read your text up to the end with FK like this or greater and
take actions? Answer is obvious.

The best thing it is FREE. You just need to know how to use it to your advantage.

You can use it in Word as well as in Outlook.

Word:
Click Tools - Options - Spelling and Grammar - Check Grammar with spelling - select Show Readability Statistic - OK. Once you've done that the FK score will be displayed on your screen after you spell check your document.

Word 2010:
Click Review - Spelling & Grammar - Options - Proofing - check Show readability statistic - OK.

For MAC:
Instead of Tools - Options go to Word - Preferences. Once you get there the instruction is the same.

Outlook:
Click File, and then click Options - Click Mail, and then, under Compose Messages, click Spelling and AutoCorrect - Click Proofing - Under When correcting spelling in Outlook, make sure the Check grammar with spelling check box is selected - Select the Show readability statistics check box.
After you enable this feature, open a file that you want to check, and check the spelling. When Outlook finishes checking the spelling and grammar, it displays information about the reading level of the document.

Now you know how to check FK score.

P.S
By the way, FK score for this thread is 5.8

I've never worried about FK reading level, and I've never had a major problem with people not reading my stuff.

I guess my vocabulary isn't that big

      Hey, Clayton

Me too. But when I found that information I checked some of booklets that were issued by the company where my daughter worked. And I found that their promotional booklets got FK 11-12. Who would read them?
