Hey guys, I just wanted to share a small tip with you that has boosted my sales letter conversions by over 60%. We all know about the power of TRUE scarcity. In short, it's about setting a REAL limit to your offer... Be it time or quantity, and giving a powerful believable reason as to WHY there is a limit. Paul Hancox made a great thread about it the other day. Here it is: The Truth About... Scarcity I have used it in the past on several occasions and it really has the potential to make any offer sell out. All the offers I have used it on have indeed sold out sooner or later. Anyway, this thread is NOT about true scarcity, it's about fake scarcity and how it can hurt your sales. Sometimes you just don't want to limit something. Recently, I was using fake scarcity on one of my products and it converted quite well. So I was thinking "If it's working, there's no need to fix it". After giving it some further thought and just being extremely bored, I decided to test it. A single minor change... I simply removed the fake scarcity pitch of having a limit to my offer, a limit to a digital product that was not real and it was never going to end. One week later my conversion for that offer had increased by 60%. But why? It seems to me that every day we have more educated consumers and they are beginning to see right through crap like that. So don't bother, you don't have to. Just be honest guys, it works. Some food for thought, - Dan |

Wow, that's great and yet everybody uses the 'limited something', you're right though I'm sure most people see through that. Great to know though that you have tested it and your conversions did increase. Thanks for sharing! |

Hi Dan Congrats for testing it ![]() Incidentally, you might want to test some *real* scarcity as well. But instead of with the product itself, you could test with a bonus, ie. offer a really great bonus for the next X number of people, or until a certain date. And actually pull the bonus once X number have been reached, or after the date - and see how that goes. P.S: The link to my thread doesn't work |

Yeah, I have used true scarcity when I have promoted launches in the past, by setting a real limit to my bonus. It does wonders. I fixed the link. ![]() - Dan

Great point you have made here, I used scarcity only a few times with products and it seemed only once people realized that i actually did stop sales after a certain point or only sold it for a few weeks etc etc. Until that point people just think its another fake ooo there is only 100 left or whatever and then the same product is re-released or just carry on selling and the buyer feel's stupid for buying it initially when they could have waited to buy it when they were actually in a better position to make most use of it and allocate the funds. For me making a fake limit or pretending there is a limit is cheating your clients, both people that buy and don't buy. I believe in all my products and okay the sales from it is good extra money which is of course nice but its not my main income and it shouldn't be anyone's main income either, especially if you are teaching someone how to do something when you haven't done it yourself. Daniel, Hi! As someone who always tries to be honest and scrap the hype...I recently did a classified ad ( still running ) in which I changed copy, pricing, asked questions and for advice...left my changes visible for all to see, yet didn't get any results until I dropped the price soooo low ( response has been great ). I agree with you and Sheryl both. My question is this, should I repost this on a bump as is or just redo the basic ad to my liking. My concern is I'm getting some good views with very little input on the advice end. Again, the conversions since the price drop are great. Hey, it's a helluva deal! If either of you think it would help, It's posted on the second page of the classified section under $1.00 locked in for all Warrior Members. I'd really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, George |

Marketers who use fake scarcity tactics get blacklisted by me. I also hate the OTO that say "leave and you will never see this offer again" and then you log into the members area that there is the offer at the top of the page.

When you pitch it again, simply state that they missed the discount in the OTO and that they can't get it anymore.

Great Post. I recently saw a sales page that had a special price and it had an End Date. i think having a special offer end date is more effective than saying "only limited copies are being sold." But i do Like Honesty, it Builds Your Credibility Straight off the Bat in My Opinion. I like to Sell the Steak and not the Sizzle Features over Benefits in My Opinion Great Post =D |

It's amazing to me that so many people feel it's okay to lie to get a sale. The theme of this thread is that lots of people see the lie for what it is and it hurts sales so you should think twice before pushing the phony scarcity thing. There was a thread around a week or so ago where a guy had some slightly damaged CDs and sold them all as such at a discount. He did so well with that promotion that he began to ‘create’ damaged stuff to sell. Smells pretty funky to me. But conventional wisdom seems to be that if you can float a lie or other deception without detection, well, that's okay because it brings in the bucks. Is it any wonder that the FTC has fast-buck Internet Marketers in their crosshairs? |

Hey, Here's something to think about. The idea is to start promotional offers intermittently. But, Here's the catch. When you DO start a special offer, also include a short list of last 'N' offers you ran. This adds to your offer's credibility. Regards, Revolves |

| Well, it's not like this stuff started with internet marketing. The Robert Collier Letter Book mentions the same thing. In one case the publisher had to create damaged sets of books once the supply of the real thing ran out, and one of the employees complained about the extra work having to damage the sets.

Digital products going 'out of stock?' Of course it works with the bonus stuff. This is a good tip for new to the game.

Thanks for this thread dan. I started making ad copies with the thinking of "always include scarcity" hype. I never believed it was necessary but still proceeded having them. This goes to prove not everything that works will work forever. Thanks again! |

I have an ebook for sale where I have a limit to how may I'm going to sell at the current price. Once I've sold that number the price will go up. I'm not saying I'll stop selling it, just the price will go up.

Those shopping channels use that technique all the time and they seem to be doing well, but on the internet you would guess that people would have countless options and not go for that kind of thing.
