There's been quite a few people posting here - looking to start their copy careers.
I really want to add something that I feel is important to the new copywriter conversation.
Because beyond writing effective copy, and you know, converting...
The #1 ingredient in any gig is... your relationship with the client.
I'd go so far as to say...
Relationship-building is the absolute key to a successful copywriting career - ahead of the copy itself.
Personally speaking...
I spend a lot of time getting to know my clients. In fact, I always try to communicate that we're partners in their success, especially if I have equity or backend built into the deal.
But even if I don't...
I want to make sure the people I work with feel supported in using the copy and strategies we collaboratively create, together.
And selfishly...
I need to like the people I work with. I need to wake up in the morning and feel jacked about what the day holds. The moment a relationship stops being mutually fulfilling... is the moment I ask myself, "What can I change? What can I do differently? Or is this still right for me?"
It's important to ask those questions; it's important to always make sure you're a good fit... for everyone's highest and best good.
However, I do find that...
When I bring my true self to the relationship, establish important boundaries, like the worth of my time... communicate my truth... listen to their truth...
And show up every time we talk... or every time I sit down to write their copy, the relationship never sours. It only grows, evolves and becomes more fulfilling.
And more profitable.
It's all about making a REAL connection with people.
It can't always be about the money.
Truth be told...
It's never about the money.
Yes, everyone enters the relationship to make a killing.
That should be a given.
The question is (when you're in the feeling out process)...
"Are we an awesome, natural, collaborative team?"
If you get a resounding YES! in your gut... and the numbers make sense...
That's when the magic happens. That's my experience anyway.
