To any copywriters who have some free time on their hands...

I figured it was only a matter of time until someone took the 99designs.com concept and applied it to copy.

Thoughts on the business model? Anyone know who created it?

    It's interesting... but...

In my opinion, most copywriters who have some success behind them aren't going to write for a chance of getting paid.

Newer copywriters will - and it's a great way for businesses with a smaller budget to get a rising star.

Yea, I've thought of crowdsourced copy, but like Chriswrighto said, it's most likely just going to attract newer Copywriters.

I also doubt it'd be cost-effective for the client as they'd have to make the prize money large enough to get people to risk writing a piece for it.

On 99Designs, the MINIMUM you have to offer as a prize is $300, and that's a damn expensive logo imo... I've seen plenty of quality logos come from sellers on Fiverr (though I wouldn't recommend getting Copy from there). Graphics are just something which is much easier in general to do. A lot of people might argue that hiring a big firm and paying $500 for a logo is MUCH better than getting one off of Fiverr, but I think that's just artistic douchebaggery...

That being said, if you're going to spend $1,000's or $10,000's on Copy, might as well hire someone with a proven track record, rather than a slew of nobodies.

They would have to be idiots to jump on that, or severely bored, or without a girlfriend.

Copy is far easier to steal than design.

Yep. ... These guys are getting the input of lots of creative young people for free.

The ideas they come up with might be used even if their copy doesn't win the competition.

Anyway, I'd advise any self-respecting writer to not participate in this stuff. You're better off pursuing clients or putting together a mock portfolio. Then there's also the fact that by supporting sites like that, you're hurting your industry.

There's litle to gain there other than bragging rights, and what do you have to brag about? -- You were the pick of the litter, chosen among noobs by someone who may or may not know good copy.

And if you lose, you might be discouraged about your writing ability. I guess you could try again, huh?

Better to take your lumps in the pursuit of real wins...

I hear the cry from new copywriters all the time that they don't
have a portfolio. What should I write? Should I write for free?

This tells me that copywriters old or new don't like to write
with the chance that they would get paid but with the surety
that they would get paid. I really can't see this business
model working for copywriting. Maybe for a slogan or such short
copy, but for long copy? No way.
