When Copying Ads by Hand... (a newbie question)

Should I copy them in the exact format written?

For example, in an ad that has 3 columns, should I divide my piece of paper into 3 columns and then copying the ad? Or just focus on copying the ad by hand and worry about how it's formatted later?

How did you do it?

Thank you in advance for your help. If this is better answered in a previously written post, please direct me there.

You're stopping yourself from taking action by getting too bogged down in the details.

If this is how you want to study copywriting, pick a way to do it (whether straight down the page or three columns) and start writing.

This is the lesson to newbies - action trumps endless analysis. Those who act can course correct as they learn from real-world applications.

Those who never take action because they're waiting to hear about the RIGHT way to do it...

Well...we know what happens to those guys.

We don't know where the OP is in his/her copywriting education.

It's possible that the OP hasn't obtained a basic knowledge of copywriting techniques yet. If that's the case, writing sales letters out by hand (in any format) is not a good way to start out.

You have a valid point. Everyone must start somewhere, though. It seems this is the method the OP has chosen. And as I said, if this is how you want to learn more, just get started. Whether or not there is more experience or other options is rather irrelevant.

If this is the choice you've made, then do the work. If you're wondering if this is a path you should follow, then you're asking the wrong questions.

    The format isn't important.

    Just write the ads.

  • I wonder which would be better…(assuming you have to choose one or the other).

Writing 5 (top notch) sales pieces by hand x 20 times.

    Or

Reading 500 (top notch) pieces x 5 times.

    Steve

P.S. Over all the years I've done both. Not sure which one was the most beneficial.
