You Guys Understand Marketing Better... I'd Love Some Advice.

Hey there guys,

I thought I'd ask you since you will most likely have first hand experience with my dilemma.

Say I was going to create a product showing people how to make money online, quickly, easily and from scratch...

Would a simple guide explaining the entire process or an actual case study style of product showing me going from nothing to making a decent profit in a month be more marketable.

Now I know you guys could sell any of the two with great copy, in fact I'm sure you could probably sell an empty ebook and still have people love it.

So I guess a better way of posing the question is... If two people offering the same product with the only difference being one is a guide and one is a case study asked you to write their copy.

You were interested in both, they both paid the same wage and royalties but you only had enough time to work on one... Which would you choose and why?

    In general (or at least in the normal sales process), people buy the journey - not the end result. I wouldn't care to learn how Donald Trump buys and sells properties. However, I'd pay a fortune to see what he personally did to get to where he is now. Think about weight loss products. You may never get that chiseled stomach or those vein-filled arms, however you want to learn the tips and tricks on how to get a smaller waist. Think about what the buying response really is. They aren't buying the ideal they will lose weight. They aren't buying into the pictures of the fitness models. They ARE buying into the process.

    You always want to sell the journey - not the end result... so the case study for me.

      Although it will take a little longer than just writing a guide I thought it would be better documenting the process from zero to profit from the buyers point of view.

      It also, in my mind anyway... Seems like it would be easier to write the copy for the product.

    Wait, WHAT?!

    PEOPLE BUY PRODUCTS THAT OFFER THEM RESULTS.

    People don't buy fitness products for the journey of fitness.... they buy products to get the end results. In fact, the end results are pretty much the only thing that most people care about, they're just willing to suffer through the BS to get there, and even then, most don't even bother.

    That example is not even logical. You could have said "You may never get a small waist, but you want to learn how to get vein-filled arms."

    No, people buy fitness products on the hope that they too can have all the things you mentioned.
    Think about what the buying response really is.
    The desire for results.

    They aren't buying the ideal they will lose weight. They aren't buying into the pictures of the fitness models.

    Neither. Because they both sound like duds that aren't actually competitive products that there is a real basic need for.

      Which is why I explicitly stated that "you were interested in both" why even bother posting your answer?

      You simply popped in, disregarded my question and made an assumption based on nothing.

      Also, why would a product that shows you how to make money not fill a basic need?

    See what your market likes.

    Or, do some research on how others sold something similar to the same people you're planning to sell to and make a note of which way seems to work better.

    Case studies show me that something's worked of someone. If that someone seems like me, I'll say that it has a good chance it will work for me / I can me it work too.

    The journey thing shows that one person got the results I'm after / made something work the way I want to do it, it's good for inspiration. Maybe for buying, IF that person is a lot like me and isn't lying about how he started.

    You know all the homeless high-school drop-out uses discovers simple formula to make $1 mil a month? They get on my nerves.

    I'm sure every now and again some homeless high school drop-out makes it big, but it's rare. It's a lot more common for people who finished high school and have the skills to keep a roof above their heads.

      This would be a no hyped system that can be started cheaply and pull in at least $100 per week.

      Whats more if I go the case study route everything will be verifiable. They will be able to physically check everything they see in my videos.

        Thank you for an interesting thread.

        It's clarified some ideas in my head - and made me realize I was focusing on what was easiest for me rather than what would interest and engage potential customers.

        I have been dipping into an old book called 'tricks of the mind' by Darren Brown which is essentially a biography with " how to develop me skills". I found the weaving of the two aspects truly engaging.

        So my pennyworth to your dilemma would be do both - engage your audience with the story and empower them with the guide. If you can integrate the two threads your audience will be both educated and entertained.

        Some of those silly stories are pure bullshit and all hype.

        Some of them are true.

        Desperation can be a powerful motivator, especially when you have nothing to lose and are willing to try anything.

        Don't knock those so-called "silly" stories. People buy from people they like. Stories help people like you.

    As long as the your product will get your customer results that is all that matter. So it really doesn't matter which you use. I would choose the option that takes less time.

    You are hot to put out a WSO. So all you need is a brief report with several examples. It doesn't have to be a case study. You find hot selling items on eBay, acquire an information product you burn to CD and sell these at 12.99 in the same searches as the product using key words.

    Doesn't that about sum it up?

    Example: Hot selling item: Omega watches, search omega speedmaster. Create or ACQUIRE (as you do) a report related, such as How to Identify a real speedmaster, or a buying guide, or something about the Omega Speedmaster, then burn it to CD, sell for 12.99 and keep the listing current.

    You simply show how you A) find bestselling products...B) How you find the information...C) How you get your listing to show up (key words).

    Should be able to do all this in a short report, and you'd be selling your WSO in a matter of days...and you can save the case study as either part of an upsell or a fixed term membership site, or as a more expensive package.

    In this case, just do it.

    Case studies are always better because they are more personalized and you feel the person is "along for the ride" as opposed to just telling you to do something

    Proof is very important in marketing.

    So if you can show people actual
    verifiable proof that your product can
    do what it says on the box...

    ...then half your battle is over.

    So case study is the way to go.

    If you can show people a series
    of videos where you create a
    money making website from
    start to finish then that is the
    way to go.
