Choosing the Right Voice

Hey,

My script is finished. My product is complete. Now the big question is: what's the right voice for my VSL?

I'm presented with a myriad of freelancers offering me their voice over services, but I'm unsure as to which one to choose. I've done a fair amount of research and I've come to the conclusion that the voice of someone similar to my target audience is optimal for conversions.

My real question is, fast/slow? Serious tone/friendly? Are there any studies that answer these questions? I know the answer is to test everything myself, but I'm on a budget and I just want to go with what's proven to convert.

Cheers!

Joaquin

If budget permits why not get two recorded that match your target audience from your research and run them both to see what converts better.

As for the speed you can always clip bits of the audio, like some of the pauses or areas that you want to speed up. You can also run the audio quicker. If you set the time to say 90% of the total then it is faster but not ridiculous . It depends on what you are selling and the effect you want to achieve. Some people will say run them fast to keep the brain engaged and moving through the presentation but it depends on what works for your market.

As for the tone...well I'm sure if it is a financial product to bankers they are going to want serious but if it is for something fun then just match to what your research tells you and I'm sure you'll do ok.

You will only know once you start sending prospects to the VSL and seeing if they convert.

Didn't you write it with a voice in mind? If not, how do you write a vsl script WITHOUT a voice in mind?

Okay, your script has pauses, inflections, words you wanna HIT hard; stuff like that, right?

Now, when you listen to the VO auditions, who sounds the most like the emphasis you injected in your script?

You want authenticity - as much as - if not more than trying to match what you think your audience "sounds like."

I thought from the question that you were talking about the usual
meaning of the word "voice" when it comes to writing, i.e. the style
or distinctive personality of the writing, not the literal voice.

Anyway, one rule of thumb is that if you want your product appear
easy to use then use a female voice. But you definitely want to use
the style of speaking of your audience to reach most.

Of course I have a voice in mind. I'm working with an author and I'm creating the script from her perspective. The problem is, she's not a native English speaker and she can't do the VO herself. I think my question is very valid and it's kind of rude that you assume that I'm creating my VSL without a voice in mind.

Thanks to everyone else who replied. I have decided to hire 2 voice over artists and split test the videos. I'm sure I'll learn something interesting from this.
