In fact, the secret is in the headline of this post.

Can you identify it?

That is a true secret, Ray. Thanks for sharing.

I've been using it in my email writing for years (but not verbatim). Especially the subject lines to get the point across quickly.

That's why every WrestleMania is the biggest event in Sports Entertainment history.

Same with how the SuperBore... I mean... SuperBowl is marketed.

I've heard many of the top VSLs do the same thing: THIS is my biggest secret ever to (fill in the blank)... and I've never given this much free information before.

It's setting the table... creating a sense of magnitude. And yes, it works.

There's an old saying that goes like this...

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink".

Well you can make it drink by putting enough salt in it's hay!

So this is 'salting' the reader so the message gets consumed.

We see it used every day on tv advertising what's coming up,
we see it with the new movie trailers.

We also see it inside the copy with the tantalizing things
which are going to happen as described in bullets.

I've seen it used by a sales trainer to retail stores use it on a handful off store owners.
At first he couldn't get a hearing from them. Next time he dropped little pearls for them to
want to know more. He just kept dropping little pearls to keep them hungry for more.
He never divulged what he did to get the results he did. This went on for so long that they asked him to stay overnight at their hotel.
Next morning he kept dropping these little pearls until they said enough is enough.
What did they have to do to get the results other store owners got.

He signed them all up for a bit over $ 200k.

My point, it works in person as well as in mass media.

      Yeah I agree.

I totally get the point (and aspects of it are true), but continually using superlatives in this manner completely dilutes the message and the reputation of the sender.

And don't even get me started on branding and style...

I really think that you might want to clarify what you meant.

You said that YOU made over 600 million.

Did you mean that your copy has made your clients that much? Was that what you meant instead?

        If so, it's possible.

I have several clients who do one to a few million per month off of the copy I've written for them. And since I've been at this over 30 years those numbers plus a lot of clients in between those figures and zero really add up.

One thing though. If you're a wordsmith you may wish to consider employing your skills so that the true meaning of your statement becomes the general conclusion.

Ouch, I'm in shock at such a smack down...

that hurts. Need to hop in my 1983 Yugo and go for a long drive (if it starts)...maybe even drink some Dos Equis like Jonathan Goldsmith (If I can find some change in the couch).

Seriously though, I do appreciate any help, I try and learn something every time I visit the forum. Sometimes I don't have a lot of time to post and get in a hurry...but I appreciate any constructive criticism.

                      Curiosity
: the desire to learn or know more about something or someone
: something that is interesting because it is unusual

Gossips, rubberneckers, and readers of ads who continue to read have feelings of missing out on something or else they do not continue to read...there has to be an underlying element in the copy which turns that curiosity into action...and that is a sense of missing out if they don't.

                      altruism
: feelings and behavior that show a desire to help other people and a lack of selfishness

Altruistic people have a sense of missing out on their own mission, life fulfillment and purpose. The copy appeal to these people is about helping them fulfill their mission, about missing out on their potential.

                        1. Altruism, by its very nature, does not think of self.

Definition: The belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others.

                        2. Gary Halbert, whom you mention often, stated, "Self-interest is very important, but curiosity trumps it."

                        The two are mutually exclusive.

Gary stated a lot of things. So what?

We're talking copywriting secrets here, and they are NOT mutually exclusive as you assert. They go hand in hand.

The COPY APPEAL to a target market of altruistic people, is to their need and want, which is to help other people.

                          For all newer copywriters, if you were to start with this;

My target does not want to MISS OUT on _______________.

You'll be light years ahead of those students who have to learn formulas and those who try to incorporate elements and hidden persuaders, and such...

IF you simply write to a person who doesn't want to miss out on ______ whatever it is you are offering, your copy may be better than that written by someone trying to use "elements"

The definition of altruism includes the word "selfless". Therefore it can't possibly be connected to a self need or want.

And curiosity isn't necessarily connected to a need or want either. Some folks are naturally curious.

Altruistic people have a neural driver which predisposes them towards "group selection" behaviour.

Group selection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically: Their genes are enhancing the replicative value of their brother and sister genes in the tribal structure we all lived in 50,000 years ago. (most of the people in a given tribe shared a large proportion of their genetic makeup for obvious reasons).

Altruistic acts were good for the extended genome of the tribe and also showed a healthy psychology of self sacrifice to any prospective sexual partners and thus enhancing their own genes' replicative value.

Fitting the two dynamics together: Altruism-"missing out" would involve the "missing out"
factor as a the absence of a reward signal to the appropriate brain areas.

Interestingly the altruism driver is known in the persuasion community as "Kill Switch Zero" in that it can overcome any other emotion.

The most potent emotion is fear and self preservation...yet altruism can turn someone into a suicide bomber for the "good" of their group.

      Sunset Beach many moons ago.

He said, "Everybody feels, at sometime or another, as if they're missing out on SOMETHING. Tap into those feelings."

He then when on to tell me exactly how to do this, a secret he shared with Gary Halbert, Ben Suarez, Jay Abraham and several other names you should recognize. They ALL took this secret and built millions of dollars of business and the beat goes on.

If, as a copywriter, you aren't applying the step by step process to tap into the feelings of ANY market, who feels they are MISSING OUT on something...

      Then YOU, friend,

Are missing out on copywriter Nirvana.

I like that...you're always full of good advice. Am also jealous you got to hang out with Joe Karbo.

After about 3 decades of marketing something or other (I'm 55 now), here's something that works for me.

It's all about the cure. People want a cure...and I'm not just talking about health cures.

What does your product cure? Every product cures something.

A super-duper chopper slicer cures the problem of spending too much time chopping your vegetables.

A flashlight cures the problem of not being able to see things in the dark.

Those sexy jeans cure the problem of not being able to look skinny in your other pants...

      and on and on.

When you approach your product from the angle of it curing something it puts all the other aspects of your marketing into perspective. What is the biggest cure your product offers?

Headline - hit me with the biggest cure (benefit)

Bullet points - give me the cures and make them sound like sweet relief

      it's all about cures.

I use this formula because it puts everything into a good perspective. It not only gives me a killer way to come up with marketing strategies, etc., but it saves a lot of time. See how I gave you a cure by using this idea?

Instead of thinking of stuff like benefits and all, I simply think of all the cures the product offers...try it.

I've found that usually it's not that we don't realize certain things...it's the way we put things into focus that can mean success or failure.

Oh well, if you're looking for a new mindset to use, try this. It works wonders. Hope I explained it well enough for anyone to understand it.
