Copywriting: What To Study

OK, I'm a lifelong professional writer (meaning, I've actually made money from it! Awards as well), but I've known from the beginning that writing copy is a whole other ball of wax than the other kinds of writing I've done.

I'd love to hear from experienced professional copywriters here: What training did you take and what books did you read that helped you the most?

Best,
Tanna

    Tanna,

One of the better tips I learned some time ago (and have heard it offered multiple times by other successful copywriters) was to find a copywriter you respect, take one or more of their sales letters, and (using longhand) copy it over and over and over and over for 4-6 weeks.

Yes - like anything else worth doing or having WORK is required. You'll find over time that your (copy) writing will improve greatly and it will then be a part of you.

    Good luck!

      Hi S2S,

That is a great tip! Actually, you made my day -- I love any excuse to write in longhand It's fun for me. Sad, huh? LOL

I incorporate multi-sensory learning into things I do and teach, and that includes writing longhand.

      Thanks much!

Specifically, I'm looking for writing that sells ebooks, teleclasses, workshops, that kind of thing. I don't know if I'll have use for direct response any time soon.

The term copywriting gets thrown around a little too much. There
is copy for institutional advertising (image ads) and copywriting to
create sales/leads. These two are night and day.

Direct response is where you ask for a specific action in the
ad. It could be "click here" it could be "buy now" it could
be "opt-in for more information" - anytime you ask the
visitor or reader to take an action which moves towards
or directly results in a sale, you are doing direct response
          copywriting.

So - if you want to make money selling ebooks and stuff
it's ALL direct response.... and Brian Keith Voiles's course
gets a high recommendation from me as well.

Where can we find out more about Ad Magic?

from Brian Voiles. His course has it all about as good as I have seen it
      explained.

You can find it on eBay for nothing.
      A couple of searches:

advertising magic, great deals on Education Learning on eBay!

The Advertising Magic course reprint rights were sold to many
distributors a few years back. Just as selling your ebook as
PLR will soon result in somebody selling it for pennies, such
is the case with reprint rights.

It's a great course though. Don't be fooled by the rock-bottom
price you can get it at. It's a premium product, though a little
      pre-internet in it's perspective.
