is print sales copy still working?

Recently everybody says that VSL is the next big thing in persuasion advertising online.

But how about print? And by print I don't mean newspaper but a traditional text only sales copy?

Is anyone still using it as a direct marketing tool? What results do you have with it vs VSL?

cheers

    1) If no one replies, probably shouldn't re-post the question.

    2) This is the question, along with long copy vs. short copy, that never dies.

There will never be a right answer. Focus on results.

Regardless 1) - i think my other post was cancled by the system(perhaps because i used the word "dead" in the title)

regardles 2) - you got point, I agree.

      Results is what matters

      thanks

    WSLs outperform VSLs regularly.

I tend to advocate WSLs. First to dial in the offer and get a baseline for conversions. It's quick and easy to make changes.

Then when we have something that's profitable, we test various VSLs.

  • Say, I'm selling gold sovereigns at a 59% discount - with categoric evidence beyond any and all reproach proving they are genuine.

It wouldn't matter what medium I used - they would sell like hot cakes.

"Steve, are you trying to say the offer supersedes the way the glorious advertisement is transported to the good people - and if the said offer is an absolute stunner you don't even have to overly fret about the words - i.e. you can ramble on a bit..even though you ought not to?"

    Yes.

But ideally be empathetic, keep it simple, keep it true and get to the point.

I personally don't see the big deal about VSL. I guess it works because a lot of top marketers are using it.
I've tried using a mix and think it could definitely work. maybe some of it depends on the product.
I don't like sitting through videos though unless it is very very interesting.

  • Lol - thanks Rick.

I did say "gold sovereigns" surely nobody would turn them down…

    Steve

P.S. I also said - "with categoric evidence beyond any and all reproach proving they are genuine" - maybe not touting a one off $1500 coin for $25.00 with a lame excuse for selling it. Not exactly helped by being on the street with a verbal " please believe me, it's true" from a presenter with a film crew near a coin - stroke - jewellery shop next to a store called "Thrifty Threads"… (and even if people "believed" him and wanted the deal, they probably didn't want to be filmed and be seen by all and sundry as "taking advantage" of the guys "misfortunes" and being overly "greedy").

Going back to my sensational 59% off sovereigns - perhaps an Ad with a sworn statement from the likes of The Chief Secretary to the Treasury and The Royal Mint with a solid believable and convincing reason for the discount would help boost the credibility.

Yea, long copys still making profits, but i like more short sales copy that converts, put some testimonials and you good to go!

The big offer in front of right persons make your sales explode.

I think vsl can be good, I bought one yesterday, but the product was simply awesome and the vsl just highlighted it in a way that made me know 100% I wanted to buy it.
Like halbert or any copywriter will say, all the copy in the world (probably including VSL) can't cover a bad offer but a good offer with ok copy might sell. that's my opinion anyways,
