30k USD mentor program - worth the money?

Has anyone done Alan Forrest Smith's MENTOR program?

I know it's expensive, but if it's really all it claims to be I would be willing to make the investment. Some reviews would be nice.

Thanks.

Definitely worth it bro. You'll make that back with your first two sales letters.

Once you meet the guy, however, tell him he's missing a word from his header, and for just $15,000, I'll proofread the whole page.

"THAT MEANS YOU COULD BE WORKING AND BUILDING A ROCK-SOLID FULL OR PART-TIME COPYWRITING WITH MYSELF FOR ONE FULL YEAR."

(Let's see how quickly this gets fixed... )

To be perfectly honest, I hope the guy makes a killing. I really do.

If he can get people with brains enough such that they have $30k laying around to hand it over to him ("full amount payable upfront") for "mentoring", that says something reeeeally important about the power of sales copy...

Wish there was a way to know...

There are actually lots of spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes throughout the sales letter, thats what makes me a bit sceptical.. However from reviews on other websites apparently he is the real deal..

You'd do well to pay attention to the grammar and spelling mistakes and be skeptical of the reviews.

Do you honestly think he can teach anyone anything that's worth $30k? You're pulling my leg, bro.

What is he -- a wizard? I know he kinda looks like one, but...

Maybe "orange beetle" is an ingredient in a potion he makes that -- poof! -- turns you into a copywriter...

Have you ever noticed? Sometimes ignorance of a subject likes to parade itself down Main Street beating a big, bass drum.

          • Here's where I make myself super unpopular.

First off, I figured Alex & The Guy ain't lightweights from stuff they wrote here & elsewhere.

So when I hear things like

I figure I gotta go check the guy.

            1st impression?

            Neat beard, sucky typos.

But, srsly, a whole lotta stuff goin' on under the sunflower chitin.

Right up front, he figures the main pitch.

Here's what he says when you click on MENTOR and follow thru to WORK WITH ME:

I do not work for nothing – don’t ask!
I do not work for peanuts – don’t try!
I do not work as a slave – Don’t even attempt!

K — here's a guy who can pick and choose.

Dig further, and you see where he's picked and chosen, along with testimonials gonna make a choir of angels sound like Death Metal.

Then you got the articles, the blog, the DVDs.

            And the yoga.

Yup, here's a one man blitzkrieg of Beetle power who still finds time to figure with the floppy on a mat. Kew-URL.

So my knees are rattlin' here as I'm gazin' up at this immortal.

Why did I get to be so darn stoopid LAME?

But then I remember the trick in alla this.

Icon of dishin' though he may be, those whiskers of his spring from flesh mortal as mine, and his typos fire from the same mismatched synapses we all got flailin' around inside us.

So how much of his Beetlebusiness' feedin', article feedin', blog feedin', DVD feedin', chill feedin' time is he gonna pare back on to get up close and personal with the slavering hordes his Killa Copy Mentor offer lures to his feet like cum-guzzlin' whores wanna feel sumthin' punch new words from their throats?

*lemme pull back on the metaphor there, if'n only for decorum, an' also repeat: not dissin' the guy, not dissin' his evident talent-made-flesh*

Way I see it, the contract here is time.

How much time you gonna get for your 30k, how much can he (as a mortal blessed with great power of illusion) give ya without that ole beard frazzlin' white from perpetual toil?

The more persuasive he is, the less time you're gonna get, and he's already toldya he's ubermeister copy lord gonna drill down on the money.

            This ain't copy, it's math.

As is 30k outta my frickin' bank account.

I don't doubt he got somethin' to say,

            (once again...

chitin gleams strikin' eyeballs to squints etc),

an' my teeny head tossed around so much on my pillow last night thinkin' on how his GRAZIN' adjo played that bullet, I figure on billin' him for my next appointment with my stylist.

So mebbe I'll go vamp on his blog, check on his work, catch the generosity of his wind-swooped sails on a roll — but right now 30k don't swing it for me.

Tryin' to figure a workable X on the fair / ignorant axes here, but if this runs like usual, guess I'll be slain.

            Supplementary:

Just hit on the photos of him pulsin' out with his tats.

I figure any axes round here ain't ours to grind (as "Zoomans").

So, yeah, vampin' out on this guy.

Beyond the sales stuff, his prose is like an open wound.

Mixture of feral, ferocious & filosophikl.

            Neat combo.

            Supplie:

I figured the guy growled, but he got a fancy scarf flipped his voice all tenor in this vid:

Accordin' to the YouTube blurb, my vampin' out just saved me $10k on the $30k deal, but I figure he owes me for the promo.

That's grazin' forya, if'n you believe Godin.

            Later (After Lunch):

            Final thought.

            More math.

As of now, this vid is runnin' 581 views since March 25 last year.

Quick calc makes that 1 hit per day.

So we gotta help the guy out here.

'Cos he's one of the pros.

I see 10 visitors to this thread right now, so if'n we all follow the link and stick with the show till the hairdresser part*, I figure we boost lifetime hits by 1%.

*You GOTTA WATCH for this to MAKE ANY SENSE.

We got 97 people viewin' the Copywritin' forum, so if all 10 of us post LOLcat pix in the wake of the action, thereby bumpin' up the post views to a figure closer to the big shiny 30K beamin' from the post title, mebbe we can help the guy break 20% by nightfall by suckin' these viewers in.

            Let's call it an "experiment".

Let's see if we can bump that limpin' view tally to somethin' closer to 750 or even a thou thru the power of Warrior curiosity alone.

If I see nuthin' shiftin' by midnight, gonna figure you're all losers.

$30k is a lot to plonk down on someone you're sceptical of. You could start by just getting his DVD's, risking only $295 instead. After that, if you're convinced he's the guy for you, then let us know how you get on in the program.

You should also look at other CW's, many of whom have a mentorship program for a much lower financial outlay. Look at John Carlton, Kevin Rogers, etc. With Carlton you KNOW you're getting 'the best of the best'.

I'll tell you what though, I'm very impressed with AFS's vision. And I don't mean his philosophy, I mean his actual vision. On the page for the mentorship program he says...
"From my office window I can see almost 40-miles north towards Cumbria and the view is truly spectacular that goes right over the top of the trees and old houses right up until the furthest point where the Pennines (hills) begin."

40 miles? Everyone else is like Mr Magoo in comparison...

I have no doubt that some business mentoring - possibly even from this guy - is worth several times $30k.

However, I've never seen "high value" mentoring sold like this.

When I have seen it in the real world, it is always some kind of partnership. Something like "I'll help you increase your sales ten fold, in return for 30% of the revenue."

I trust relationships like that because the mentor has "skin in the game."

Obviously large consulting fees are common (and quite possibly worth every penny,)

But you're not a GE executive hiring McKinsey with the company credit card to help you sell more washing machines in Bangladesh...

With offers like this, you usually don't even need a sales letter, because Alan probably isn't trying to convert cold traffic into a $30k sale.

Most likely, this offer is meant for those who have been on his list for a while, have seen the content he produces, knows/likes/trusts Alan... and has a relationship with him.

When you have a list, and you treat them like gold and become almost like friends because your info helps them out so much... the need for a huge sales letter almost becomes obsolete.

Because all the selling was done well before the sales letter even came into the picture.

Which goes back to... if you're going to sell high priced, high ticket items... your content and info you send to your list... can often do all the pre-selling for you. Good, solid relationships will trump a sales letter to cold traffic almost every time.

So, I'm guessing a lot of the people who did/would invest in this, probably didn't even need to see the sales letter... they have a current relationship that's been built up over time.

Some of my biggest sales, for seminars and the things like that... never even had a sales letter.

It was just an email that explained the offer, and it was going out to people who had been on my list for years. Didn't write a sales letter, didn't need a sales letter, was able to make the high ticket sale with an email.

All the work was done in the years leading up to the offer.

    Some interesting metaphors for sure!

In another post I "endorsed" Alan by saying he is the "real deal" because
I've "known" him for a long time, so I know he is no Johnny-come-lately.

But I know nothing about his training program, so you'll have to get that
answer from a former student. At the same time, anything I say can be held
against me because I'm a competitor as far as copywriting training is concerned.
So I would recommend that you chat with him and more so some former students
to find out if they got value from his training.

      • Yeah, technically, those celebs are dated, but mebbe he's nettin' the Anderson & Pitt generation over goobers like me.

It's a simple switch down to somethin' more contemp (or up to somethin' more deader.)

What's cool about the last metaphor is how the imagry swings on an adjective, and hits on a double meaning.

The hyenas, I get, and their fangs drillin' down on the buffaloes, I get, and mebbe for a different audience, this red in tooth n claw vizyool would do the trick as it stands.

But this is a $30k course for pros, and that 'grazin' looks to me like the best part of the pitch: lookit me, brekkin' the rules real good, to lure you in and spit you back out at the fodder -- only, when you get there, your zingin' copy is the fodder and all you gotta do is lie back and...kinda graze.

        That's flippin' out.

There's lotsa superexamples here also, top of the hierarchy in their class, but you can't rely on Mom and the Devil alla the time, and I wonder what else he has thrashin' about in the pit.

Whetever it is, I ain't feedin' it $30K, that's for sure.

I'll second Alex and his vote for Alan... I've been on his mailing list for quite some time.

I've been online since 2001, for 14 years, and I remember seeing Alan's stuff back then, on
    Michel Fortin's copy board.

Now, that's not to say I know his course or mentoring, because I don't.

But I can agree with Alex that he's the real deal... and just because you haven't
heard of someone doesn't mean they're not legit.

He's been around a long time, his emails are usually solid content.

But the thing is, if you're hesitant, invest a few minutes and call him.

If it sounds like he's not for you... so be it.

His claims are about him, he's been around since 1998, and no doubt you'd get a good mentoring.

But will you apply it? Is being a freelance copywriter really what you want?

Note the part where he tells of studying into the wee hours of the morning, so he was motivated.

    Are you?

See, it's not about making money, lots of ways to do that for a 30k investment, you could even buy a franchise and have a job and make money. He was making money with the salons, but he grew to hate it (same as I did with my golf business).

So, IF you have to be a freelance copywriter, then it is probably a good deal, it is a shortcut and can shave years off your learning curve.

But, from some of other posts, you should take a deep breath and decide IF this is what you want to do and then COMMIT to what you want.

The 30k could be the best investment of your life...

    gjabiz

PS. I'm not familiar with his mentoring, but his work has worked for some very big names in IM, if that is where you want to go.

  • I have to admit I did not know who Alan was.

So I went to the link you provided and looked around. I liked what I saw and subscribed to his newsletter.

I personally don't think you did justice to Alan's offer. It's not $30,000 for a mentoring program.

It's $30,000 to be mentored for an entire year. That is a different type of commitment and sounds cheap to me.

Do note: I'm a huge advocate for continued education. I know what I've spent over the course of 20+ years gathering copy writing books, CDs, DVDs, stuff dating back to the mid 1800's and all the way up to the present. You name it I probably own it.

As mentioned above, start off small. Get Alan's courses. He's got 5 different ones. Take your time and really learn from Alan. When you finish one course go back and buy the next one.

Once you've completed all his DVD courses then move forward with his mentoring program.

I did that with Dan Kennedy's stuff many years ago. I bought his books, then Magnetic Marketing and so on and so on...

But as Gordon stated, are you willing to sit up into the wee hours of the morning learning, or in between your breaks at work popping open a book to read a page or two as you eat your sack lunch?

The other suggestion I'd make is call or email Alan and explain your interest along with your hesitation or apprehension and ask him to address your concerns.

Go to the source. You might be surprised what Alan has to say. I'd say give him a shot.

Generally (not always but most times), a student's commitment and motivation is directly tied to the amount he invests.

OP -- pay $30k to take the mentoring. ...Or don't.

The far better bet is to hit the books on your own, learn what real copy looks like, then judge your "mentors" (if you even need one) based on that.

If you've already hit the books and think those bullets I posted above are examples of great copywriting (as Alex does), more power to you -- pay $30k for the mentoring and learn to write copy just like it.

In other news... Looks like Alan fixed the headline! Think this thread had something to do with it? Eh, maybe not. No way the guy knows this thread exists or would be in touch with any of the people in this thread.

To the OP or anyone who wonders about spending 30 thousand dollars on their education...consider this

Thousands of students borrow millions of dollars a year to get their college degree, and some stay in that debt mode for over a decade...

AND many, especially of the liberal arts variety, can't even get a decent job...

and this is done without any guarantees, the question of Worth or of VALUE falls solely on the learner, on the student...on YOU.

It depends what you think writing copy is...
It depends if you have been influenced by copy of the sellers of such education...

It depends. I have no science, only from observation here and other places the last decade...a very small percentage of those wannabe copywriters actually become what they THOUGHT they would, especially the FREELANCERS.

Now, of course, the success stands out, and for them, whether by talent, or aptitude or sheer persistence and hard work ...

reach their goals, but this reflects life in general.

IF 30 thousand dollars can help you produce a 60k dollars (USA) a year income doing what you like to do, then it may be the investment of your life.

The person doing the mentoring, may or MAY NOT be important, although I feel being able to relate and work with someone you like is important...it may not matter IF you get the results you want.

Whether this guy or that girl is doing the mentoring, is akin to Professor X, Y or Z teaching you in College A, B or C... the STUDENT and his/her application of the knowledge is what determines results.

But, thanks to all for joining in at Curmudgeon Corner (Love it Angie)...always good to see some activity here.

Wow, my copywriting mentoring differs significantly from Alan's.

For instance, I train in the copywriting equivalent of Mai Pei's three-inch punch:

Now, the real question isn't whether Alan's worth it (because I'm sure he is,) it's whether YOU'RE WORTH IT.

Granted, $30K is A LOT of money. And you're worth it, your future's worth it, ISN'T IT?

    Of course it is.

I have NO DOUBT Alan will pull out all the stops to get you where you want to go as a copywriter. As long as you hold up your end of the bargain and COMMIT. Commit to what?

    Mastery.

      My thoughts exactly.

The other thing people forget is the amount of time Alan would be committing to help his protege succeed. It's not a one day commitment. It's a 365 day commitment and that's time he's losing which could be used on other paid projects.

  • Ha!

Nuthin' soothes curmudgeonola like the swishin' of a zany beard.

Just seen Alan's up to 602 on the masterclass vid.

By my reckonin', that's mebbe 1-2 for daily tickin' over, which leaves 19 more'n yesterday, so I figure unless a buncha random guys from Peru hit on him by accident cruisin' for porno, WF can claim the 3%.

He explains the typo deal at the end btw, not that I buy that, bein' a grammar nazi an' all.

K, gonna chill out now like Cap'n Zen Curtain face...

  • Yeah, guess the guy has all the intel — and I'm figurin' he ain't sharin'.

Thing is, he's put lotsa stuff out there.

You got the YouTube vid (and there's more), the blog, the books — I read somewhere he writes 1,500,000 words a year, and it's easy to go read more than a few.

Testimonials you gotta watch for 'cos the guy probably extracted 'em from clients at gunpoint if those tats are anythin' to go by, but the point is that there's tons of stuff out there if you wanna go lookin'.

Mebbe not hardcore intel, but it's research.

Add that up and lay it out next to the 30K, then decide, I guess.

Ah, the good old days... when real men wore crab earrings. :-)

      Alex

BTW, sarcasm has a fairly negative connotation...

Sarcasm: the use of irony to mock or convey contempt

  • Guess this all hinges on figurin' the future — throwin' out stuff mebbe gonna bring you bucks or decidin' what you're gonna feed on.

    Future's a vacant space.

No one owns it, no one's been there, but hearts and minds spin on it.

Meantime, there's always a deathmatch firin' off somewhere just to keep us all goin' till oblivion hits.

But I guess we covered some ground on this one, even if some of it was mired by my reactionary goober schwango.

So — are we votin' on the guy's beard?

Might distract Angie & Alex from throttlin' one another...

    • That's cool.

But you gotta figure how nekkid beardo types of a supra-amish persuasion don't end up with a kinda pubic net.

I sure ain't never seen a supra-amish beardo type limbo dancin' nekkid.

Gonna rip your face or your dick off doin' that, mebbe both.

Hey thx for makin' me smile.

  • You know what …if I was a mentoree I would throw the $30k at Miss Balestra.

    3 things could happen…

You become the edgiest yet unbeatable copywriter in this universe and beyond.

You would get a 7 figure book deal and immediate options on all the movies.

You would demand to be institutionalised and cure anyone and everyone of whatever problem they have.

I'm thinking it would be win win win all the way.
