[QUIZ] Which copywriter discovered that long copy works better than short?

It's interesting to do a little digging into direct marketing history
now and again, and I read about this copywriter I had never heard about
before.

But before revealing the name I want to know if any other copywriter
ever ran into this tidbit of information?

  • Ray,

It was me 28 years ago when I turned 16 pages into 32 pages and the response soared.

Of course Maxwell Sackeim (1890 - 1982) might also have experienced a similar phenomena.

But the chances are it was Claude Hopkins (1867 - 1932) who initially discovered it.

LOL. The copywriter is already dead, so hopefully it wasn't you.

Those are great suggestions, but that's not the name who gets credit.

  • Ok, two more shots…

    George L Dyer

    or the legendary Bruce Barton

    Steve

P.S. Make that 2 more shots maybe it was Theodore F MacManus or Richard A Foley.

Plus a bonus shot - Joseph H Appel.

I'm getting Fred Breismeister. I've never heard about him but he was
pretty famous back in his day.

Also I didn't know that Gary Bencivenga is credited with 'inventing' the magalog,
and Walter Weintz the "penny" letter.

  • Same here I didn't know about good old Fred.

But I did know that GB and WW were credited with their "inventions"

Dare I say that The Bible, cobbled together as it was, sold much of the world on the concept of heaven long before the first sales letter was ever written?

But to be more serious, there's a really cool answer to this question in a roundabout way here:

Well, I still find it funny that I made a LOT of money online selling - without knowing crap when it comes to copywriting trivia and copywriting quotes and whatever. Cuz what'd get you an 'A' in an academic setting has no bearing on your ability to sell. Especially when copywriting is NOT the most crucial component.

But this whole forum, Main Discussion included, has always been a dwelling for wannabe marketing academics than it has for actual marketers who do the thing.

          That's what I love.

You can sell $ 10 million worth of stuff and not know a single quote from Caples or Ogilvy.

And some dude can know all the quotes and not even be able to sell $ 100,000.

Just like you can know all the baseball trivia in the world ...

And still throw like a girl.

P.S. Nothing I post is meant to be taken personal. Although sometimes my troll face does show a bit. Still, it's just the NY in me.
Hey. Some of the girls don't throw like girls dude. I'm offended!

That's the whole idea. I have zero respect for people who hide
behind a screen and throw punches like a coward.

You don't have to feel so bad about not knowing the answer, relax. I don't know it either.

              For me it's the latter.

              Trivia questions don't matter.

              Ask anyone running a biz.

Of course at the end of the day, it's all about the money.

However, I have never heard of a great businessman, athlete, singer, whatever who does not idolize someone in their field who has done great things.

Does this mean you wont be successful if you don't know it? Of course not. The success lies in your ability to apply the skills and get results.

No baseball team cares if you know who won the batting title in 1901, but I bet a pro baseball player will know that anyway. They love baseball.. they follow it.. learn everything they can.

Of course Raydal never implied knowing this trivia somehow correlates with your ability to sell.
              {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10374065].message }}
  • So, Ray has a bit of fun and posts a copywriting quiz (this being a copywriting forum).

And he gets all this grief?

    Why?

So that someone can say it's more important to make sales.

I'm guessing we already knew that.
