How to find a copywriting mentor locally?

Hello,

Does anyone have any advice on how to find a copywriter mentor locally. I feel like I would benefit more from being able to work with the mentor in person as opposed to over the Internet or phone.

I live outside of St. Louis Missouri.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Why do you feel you'd get more out of a local mentor?

It honestly takes a lot more time (drive time to meet somewhere and/or clearing my schedule and getting my place cleaned) for marginally more benefit in my opinion.

Don't Seek a Marginal Benefit in this Instance:
Couldn't agree more! It really is such a marginal benefit you are looking to obtain.

      Seek out the Best:
      - It's far better you seek out and learn from the best in my opinion.
      - Of course they could be in your local area too but it's more unlikely.

      Also ask yourself this Question?
      - Why in person?
      - With copywriting all we have is words and so why not just adjust to that being the default communication method with your mentor?
      - Sure you can have phone contact too but written communication will no doubt help your copywriting 100%.

Thank you to everyone for chiming in. To me it just seems like information is absorbed better in person. But perhaps it would be such a limiting factor that it would actually be detrimental.

A mentor will spend a lot of time reviewing your work. That's best done in an environment where the mentor can concentrate without interruption.

Having a mentor who answers questions as they occur via email is preferable to weekly scheduled meetings.

I know that Gary Halbert did offer "local" mentoring but you had to
leave your home and move to his area for that period of time.

Most copywriters who work for a company or agency learned on the
job. But most online copywriters I know worked as freelance from
the word 'go'. Interestingly I see more case of copywriters wanting to
move from the agency to the freelance model, than the other was around.

So if you want to work for a company then I'd say find an agency and
prove to them your willingness to learn the trade. But if you wanted
to go freelance, then remote learning would be an option.

I'm not sure you're cut out to be a freelance copywriter. That's a career that involves loads of solitude and little face-to-face contact.

In addition, most copywriters I know are introverts and wouldn't be interested in face-to-face mentoring.

As a result, I agree with the suggestion that you look for a local agency to work for - because they have more of a team approach to workflow. They're so much less likely to be loners.

I think you're tying your own hands. You're probably eliminating 99% of the potential mentors you could work with by insisting on finding someone who is local to you.

First, you'd have to find a copywriter who is already in your area and is willing to mentor you.

Next, you'd have to determine if the way they write sales copy (their writing style) is one which connects with you. If it doesn't then you'll probably have a harder time learning from them.

Third, you'd have to determine if you're willing/able to pay what your local mentor charges. You'd might find somebody but if they charge far more than you're willing/able to pay then you're back to square one.

Like Marcia mentioned, you might get more of what you're looking for by joining an agency in your area.

        Best of luck,

        Mike

Finding a copywriting mentor locally really isn't how it works anymore.

You'd be really limiting yourself to who you could find. Years ago if you had 5 figures you could get Halbert to teach you in between doing his laundry and folding his socks. Sadly that times over.

And now a days when people hear what the price is for a good mentor their knees buckle, tummy gets upset and their head gets dizzy. Best bet is looking into Carlton's simple writing system.

          ---Bill

you may be able to find a mentor in a local agency or in a local copywriter with loads of clients and an office outside their home. perhaps they'd allow you to intern there a little bit in exchange for learning the ropes.
